Now on month 5 with the new-to-me 460 and still am having battery issues. I have two 8D batteries which are for the house and for starting. I am wondering if anyone has ever converted to L16's or T145's x 6 for the house and a few Group 31 for start batteries? Anyone know how the schematics look?
Does the Port Battery just perform "House duties" or do both batteries contain some house and start responsibilities?

Eventually I would like to add an inverter and be able to run the TV, Microwave, coffee pot without having the generator on.......

TIA!

I have (2) Trojan J185H's for my house and (2) group 31's for the other side with a blue optima group 27 for the genny. I is a great setup so far.

Thanks Humph! Just wondering, is your set-up "factory" or did you have an electrician come in and rewire what Sea Ray did in the beginning?

I changed out the batteries myself. The existing cabling worked just fine. Are you on all 12volt or do you have some 24 volt systems?

I have the 2 8D batteries for the majority of the boat, then there is a GEL Group 27 for starting the Gen on a separate charger and two Group 31s GELS for the BOW Thruster on their own charger. I am really confused as to how the system is set up between the two big 8Ds.
In discussing the situation with an expert at the battery shop he suggested changing out the 8Ds since they are such a heavy battery with relatively little "power" and putting in some 6Vs tied together to add up some Amp hours. This is really only possible if I don't have to try and start off this bank of cells.

Thoughts?

One thing to think about is the current battery box configuration. If you start revising the type of battery you will have more in new cables and boxes than in batteries!

Ok, this set up was on the boat when I purchased it.... I have 4 x 12 volt (2 on each engine) they are maintenance free variety, 1 more dedicated for the gen and then a Xantrex 3000 (invertor) with 4 x 6 volt golf cart batteries (wet) for the 120 volt circuit on the boat. If you think you are going to run a coffee pot, extended microwave etc off of an invertor you are going to need more batteries then I have....

Very interesting Mark. It sounds like the guys and gals at SR changed things up a bit when they went to the 460. Your system sounds like what I would be attempting to mirror, but with probably 6 T145 Trojans for the invertor bank. I may just end up using the boat for now given the standard set up and then change it further down the road.....
Thanks for sharing your set-up!
