I was at the Fort Lauderdale show and looked at 2 brokerage 48da, 2009 and well a 50 2010. I noticed the high gloss cabinetry was lifting and peeling at the seems. Same on both boats. Is this a common issue? I wouldn't expect this in a fairly new boat. And how would you repair this?

I have the matte. No lifting or peeling in my 2005.

That's what my buddy said! Look for a boat with matt finish

I have the glossy cabinets and haven't noticed any issues. One thing to keep in mind for the 07-08 48DA's is they had a bad batch of sanitation hoses. Mine have some really bad cracks. I contacted Sea Ray and the hose manufacture is sending me replacement hose at no charge, I need to pay the labor to have them replaced, $2k. Still working on getting a better labor rate.

Thanks guys, I've seen about 6 different 48 da's. amazes me how people don't maintain their boats.

Please elaborate on what you have seen specifically.

Where did you see the cracks? What clued you in to find the cracks?

My local SR dealer made me aware, it was also written in the survey report. When I looked personally and I was shocked on how badly cracked they were.

Where exactly did you look, so I can look at mine?

It's the 1 1/2" hoses (black with green layline) from the head to the 2 pumps in engine room, port aft. Then from the pump to the holding tank.
My God! I can't imagine the process of removing those and running new ones. I'm sure when they are factory installed, ease of removal and replacement is not factored in. Who knows what they zip tied to them during the run from the tank to the heads. I hope they do not lose a single drip when they remove your hoses. I'm afraid to look at mine.

There is no glossy wood cabinet. It is a picture of wood covered by a polycarbonite film that is heated and somehow glued to the base cabinet. It is not uncommon for the glue to release, especially in the presence of moisture. IMO, SR (as well as others) have chosen the Pick 2 route on the cabinets. Quality, speedy or cheap.

An all wood cabinet with a veneer or the matte is the better choice.

On close inspection, Some of the 90* edges on my cabinet doors have evidence of possible separation. As a result, when dusting/cleaning, I don't let the micro fiber rags cross over those edges. I'm not sure which production yr, but SR stopped using this " less than perfect product " on the latest yachts. The edges are also " bull nosed " or rounded so it's no longer an issue.
RE: Sanitation lines....Once I removed the lines, it was apparent that the cracking/checking was only in the high temperature area of the engine room. The zip ties are not an issue, but the large hose clamps are a different story. Supporting the hose, clamp, screw/driver ( in some locations with one hand ),is a real challenge. Each screw needs to be siliconed and having a small battery powered driver is a big help. The master line required a Hole Saw and Saw Zaw ( all done behind cabinetry ). When the old line is pulled out ( with " fish string" attached ), the accompanying hot and cold water lines drop to the bottom of the PVC pipe. On re-installation the pull string and feeding process required wrestling with all the hoses to get it to start thru the conduit, which is out of arms length. Attaching a new line to the old line and then pulling thru was not an option. That would have meant managing 100' ( each head system )of heavy hose tearing up the brand new doors/frames. It's worth noting how efficient these systems are, due to the 60 DA Master Line, having ( 3 ) 90* turns. Once the heads have been disassembled and hoses disconnected at each end, stuff shop paper towels into the hose ends to prevent a mess. With help, this task took me a week. Tim
PS. For those with two head systems, I'd highly recommend completing one entire system before starting the other.

I was under the impression that when SR started making their own cabinetry and stopped using the vitrecore, this problem went away ( in the early '00s). Didn't realize it was a problem in the later 00s.

Hi Ron, Over the last 6-7 yrs, I have done 4 Sykes Crk plant tours. The only yr I noticed the improved cabinetry was in June of 2012 and they were building 2013 boats. They may have made the switch earlier. The new cabinets are " night & day " different, really nice ! Tim

I did the tour last December at Yacht Expo. The new cabinets are real wood veneer (not a photo of real wood) but I was led to believe that change occurred around 2004/5.

Sea Ray did not use the "Pick 2" method to which you refer.

They bought a laminate product known as Vitricore and used it in the boats. The original manufacturer of the product had sold the rights to another company who changed the formulation before selling the product to Sea Ray causing the delamination that Sea Ray experienced. The original manufacturer was unable to get the name back and now produces the product under the name Nuvacor with the original formulation.

Sea Ray was the victim of someone else's "Pick 2" philosophy.

So when was the official END of the use of Vitrecor and Nuvacor? Pre or post 2005?
