Only a few of us 560 guys but has anyone ever ran wire from the control panel in the salon into the bilge? I've looked at it several times and just don't see an easy way.

Jack,

First, I'm not familiar with your boat, but most all Palm Coast and Sykes Creek boats have an empty chase....looks like white corregated tubing with a smooth interior wall........with a piece of heavy monofilament ilne in it with a loop knotted at the end. They put the chase in to keep you from having to tear the boat apart to fish a wire or two. Mine is 1-1/2" dia and was completely empty, except for the monofilament line. One tip is to first use the monofilament to pull a fish tape thru, then when you pull the wire you need, pull the monofilament back in place for next time........don't try to pull wire with the fishing line.

To find it, start by unscrewing the panel and swinging it out of the way then look behind it. THe other end is most likely buried in a square perforated 2"X2" wire loom in the engine room.

It that gives you a stert, then great............if not, well....never mind!

In the manuals for smaller boats, there is a section devoted to how wires, hot/cold water, HVAC, etc lines/hoses are routed. It's in a picture/schematic-type form. Any chance the manuals for the bigger boats have that? Maybe the chase that Frank is talking about is shown?

Depending upon model and how SR chose to do it at the time, wiring diagrams are usually available in one form or another, but I have never seen the chase shown on anything SR furnishes a customer.

One of their better ideas and they don't tell us about it. Go figure. I guess it makes for a nice surprise!

I was helping my Uncle a few years back in the design of his new boat that was being built for him (N.E. Lobster-boat style). One of the things we made sure to have done is PVC tubing used in various places under the floor for a chase. Absolutely invaluable to have those!

Frank,
Once again thanks for your help. I will look for the chase. I have spent time searching around behind the panel for some sort of conduit or chase to the bilge area but never could find what would work.
I will continue the search.

hey Jack, on my 2000 560 there is a drain tube from the ac unit under the panel (white attaches to bottom tray) that goes into the bilge there. follow that or the copper tubing from that unit down to the compresser/ condenser unit below it

While I have never had to run wires into the builge on our 540 CPMY. I have run wiresfrom the hardtop down to the master stateroom for th satellite antenna. We never did find a wire chase in the boat, but what I did find was that there was sufficient room in the wire bundle to route an extra wire through it. You might have to use coax cable to snake as it is stiff.

I wonder about an open conduit from the engine room to the electric panel. I think that might be against ABYC standards as there is to be no way for funes to get from the engine room into the occupied area of the boat.

Jack,

Are you installing a new toy at the helm??

Ken

Ken,
It's actually an old issue. I have been trouble shooting my underwater lights and it appears no. 12 wire was not big enough to run both ballasts. I therefore need to rerun no.10 wire so I thought as I was redoing it I would run it off a breaker at the control panel.
I'm still up in the air on the Keys but I'll let you know. Weather's been the sh!ts here. Seas 8 ft.

Salt thanks for chiming in. I have seen expanded foam where wires go into the bilge area from the salon. I think you are correct about fumes going from the bilge to the salon. If there is a chase it is probably capped off with the foam.
I will get to the bottom of this and post up.
I got a good suggestion from an Ex member.

I thought my expert advise of wrapping the fuse with aluminum foil worked Boca Chita!! I was worried it would fry the entire electrical system.

We are still in for Key West, I am hoping it will lay down pretty soon. We have a week or so window after Christmas. I am sure we can get a couple of days out of it. Last week and over Thanksgiving, we did a couple of days at North Captiva. On Monday it was a lake and I was waterskiing behind the waverunner. We need two weeks like that over the holidays.

I ended up running the wires along side the Air conditioning lines. They come up in the same general location that the wire bundles do in the floor below the cicuit panel.
Unfortunatly now that I know how to do this lord knows what else I'll want to install.
Thanks for all the input and I hope this helps some other poor s.o.b. that has the same issue.
