An item on my list of things to do list this winter is to replace the pencil zincs on my 6CTa engines and 9.0 Onan generator .

The zincs on the after coolers and heat exchanger are about 50% I would emagine after inspecting one of them. I have never done this before so I have a couple questions.
1. Do I have to replace the brass nut and zinc plug or it looks like I can just buy the zink separately?
2. The Cummins Manuel say not to use any thread sealant on the plugs, dose this mean just on the plug threads or on the brass threads? Because it looks like there is Teflon Tape on the brass threads on the old ones.
Where is the zinc on the generator? What size zinc?
Any tips or advise will be greatly appreciated

You can buy the zincs separately. Find your kit on boat zincs dot com and see what sizes make up the kits. Some will break off in the caps but just drop them in muriatic acid for a couple of hours, rinse well and reuse. Don't use anything on the threads.

It's a lot easier to buy the zincs from boatzincs.com with the brass part on and just swap them out. They are cheap. I use quicksilver perfect seal or Permatex No3 aviation gasket maker on the threads. It won't leak, it won't corrode and those sealants won't insulate the zinc from the motor which is why they say no sealant.

Thanks, I'll check out boatzinks.com.
what about the Onan generator ? What kind of zinks are on there?

You're welcome, Jeff.

BTW, if you're still looking for zinc location on the genny, when you look at the heat exchanger, it's on your right (if I recall 1/2" or 5/8" sucket). If the genny is positioned like on my boat (perpendicular to the stringers), then the HE will be on your bottom port side with zinc being on the furthest end of the HE.

Sound like you have better access to your generator, mine is tucked in the back port corner with exhaust pipe right in front of everything! Will have to get creative to access the right side of it. Here you can see how tight it is in that back corner.

Thanks Again!

How was your first year with the new boat Jeff? I checked my zincs last spring and they were all like new. Is your boat all fresh water?
