Absolutely frustrated with this Mercruiser engine

Please tell us about the notorious issues.

I thinks most of those "notorious" issues are related to boat owners neglecting their maintenance. Now, the additional maintenance is something that I was happy to leave behind... until I had to do shaft seals and cutlass bearings. There is always a toll to pay in this game.

Boating is an expensive hobby just the way it is sucks but it's reality

I work construction and I work my ass off all year to make sure I have money to fix my boat if it breaks in the summertime I always save extra money in the boat fund

It looks like the transom plate, leg and prop were damaged too. Insurance basically will cover to the blue book value which it appears now repair costs will exceed.

Looks like this game is over. I don't know how it works in Hawaii......on the mainland the insurance company takes the boat and arranges for it to be cut up after the engine and running gear are removed. A sad moment for Hop and CSR.

I'm really glad you kept the insurance up on this. Any idea what you hit? That is a lot of damage.

I would see what kind of money they will pay if you keep the boat like you can do with totaled cars. I don't think it is cursed.

I did that a couple of times when I was a teenager. We would buy totaled cars and fix them......but that was before Carfax and the insurance companies controlling the entire process.

Try to buy the car you total now..... It comes with a salvage title that will follow it to its grave. Many insurance companies won't touch it. Copart is the go to place for the insurance guys. They sell the cars and let the breakers part them out.

Anyway.....replacing a drive should not total a boat unless...... you live in Hawaii.;)

Unless you're getting into 'over 41 foot' boats, what are the odds that a SeaRay is powered by a Mercruiser powerplant?

Well , i had a 2006 240da with a 5.0 mpi b3 . The 05 or newer searay 240 is overall the worst design you can make out of a 24 footprint in a daycruiser. Its tippy as hell , anything less than a perfect trim will make her dramatically lean on a side . I,ve been on board 24ft maxxums , bayliners and crownlines and while its true that a 24ft pocketcruiser is a bit tippy NONE was such severe than searay . The hydrodynamic design of this boat is simply a laugh.

Further : the 240da offers out of a footprint the least space in its class , in main cabin as well as in midcabin . While two adults on a 2007 maxum 2400se can sleep in midcabin stretched with ventilation and portholes , the midcabin on a 240da is a joke. No portholes at all , no ventilation and you need to be a midget adult to stretch out. In main cabin the space for sleeping is also inferior to competitors .

The same is true for the head.

The hull finish on the boat was good - better than on competitors - but the details , water pipes , boiler etc was no better or worse than on a bayliner and overall cheap plastic.

The 5.0mpi/b3 was not that bad but also full of senseless issues. The singlepoint drain is nice when new but a disaster when the engine accumulates sediment. Draining by procedure is asking for trouble in winter. Volvo penta with multiple drains gives much better control to see if anything is really drained.

The b3 drive performed ~ok in my case but i burned thru a cone clutch just out of warranty and low hours.

All in all i,m in the market for a 38 footer with tubodiesels now but never ever it will be a searay .

I have no idea what was struck. I suspect a log or something. I didn’t see anything in the water ahead of me and I wasn’t going that fast but apparently fast enough. I’ve seen the occasional log washed up along the shoreline of the lagoon. The gimbal ring snapped and likely damaged the transom plate where it hinges on the bottom. The oil has all leaked out of the legs reservoir bottle so I suspect the drive leg has a leak so there is likely water intrusion into the leg plus I don’t know what damage caused the leak. Plus I gotta hire a tow boat to move it to make sure it’s towed correctly to a haul out facility then there are the haul out fees. Altogether it’s going to be close to my limit to get repaired which I’d prefer but I don’t know. This whole situation is stressing me out.

You'll be okay just keep cool

So why are you on Club Sea Ray if you don't like Sea Rays and don't even own a boat according to your profile?

Probably leaking because the fill line from TA to drive got ripped off, no biggy.

Can't imagine a 96 would be worth much on the books. If they offer 10k see if they will let you keep it after they pay.

If you have an "agreed value" insurance policy, totalling the boat will cause the company to pay out that "agreed value" in full. If they think they can put the boat back to its previous condition for less, they will carve out a cheque for the anticipated repair amount and you keep the boat. If it's a total write off, you might at least ask the insurance co if you can keep the "wreck" for free (or ask what they're going to get for salvage and match it). Repair it on your own if the transom assembly is still ok with JR Marine kit. If the transom assembly is broken too, you might have to have the engine removed by a mechanic, then remove/replace the transom assembly yourself. Might be a nice payday for you and help you make lemonade from those lemons you've been served!!

If you need help with a JR Marine route, I'd be willing to coach you via facetime or phone (done both of my Bravo III drives in my own driveway).

Corona helped to sell for an amazing prize this searay trash and now i,m monitoring the market for a bigger boat. Why i,m here ? To exchange experience and help others regardless of brand.

Won't Boat U/S tow a non=working vessel to the nearest repair facility?

Why not go over to the hull truth and post there? You will get universal boat opinion’s there.
