Another Breakwall Accident

Reckless boaters crash into sea walls. It is very sad and I hate to see anyone go through this but people have to be careful!

Very sad.........but blaming the govt because it is not "lit up"?????? how about blaming the operator for, at minimum, being out at night, on plane, no radar, and obviously not knowing where he was - this was not an accident - it was suicide/murder. We all make mistakes/misjudgements but this one is terrible

Where we boat, there are two massive stone sea walls each over a mile long and one over a mile and a half long. They are located at the mouth of Delaware Bay and are marked by a day mark with racon and light at one end and a light house at the other end. It is very rare for anyone to accidentally run into one as both are charted and marked. It still happens but is rare. Lights, racons and signs will not replace due dillegence when it comes to nighttime navigation. Before boating in any body of water, one needs to thoroughly examine an up to date chart of the area and make note of any potential hazzard in case bad weather, fog or darkness makes the obvious obscure.
This is a tragic event and I am sorry for all who lost loved ones but this was a preventable incident.

Yes However in this situation this was there home port and they were very familiar with the break wall..

Wow, this isn't the marina breakwater, this was a 300 mtere line of man made rocks 500 metres offshore directly in the line of approach to the marina, that had no lights or radar reflectors! Google earth Leamington Marina, Ontario and see what I mean. Let me see, if I wanted to set a trap, I couldn't think of anything better. I'm almost guarenteed to get a few drunks. I' might get some 'unsuspecting' newbies who are here on holiday and I might even be lucky enough to get a commercial fisher being a little too complacent ( or tired) in fog. Ok, enough of the sarcasim. This man made structure (without illumination) has caused deaths and as is always the case in this forum, without the facts we will attribute the deaths to alcohol fuelled stupidity. Not an unnatural starting position. We naturally blame the driver in road accidents too. But, behind the scenes there are those council and roading engineeers who design these carriage ways and obstacles. We all know of 'black roads' where deaths are prevalent. We blame alcohol and speed and not driving to the conditions before we blame the engineers and bean counters who chose to keep an 'S' bend where the road would have been safer straight or created a road where the camber goes the wrong way on the curve etc etc. In this tragic case we have a hidden obstacle built by local council, too cheap to put lights on it. Given the focus on health and safety today where you can't sneeze without completing a 12 page risk assessment, signed off by all managers and the CEO, it is amazing this structure was ever allowed. Tragic.

There is no question that it is not an idea set-up. It is being questioned if it is even needed any longer. However there are some wrong facts being quoted. The rock pile was lit up, although inadequately, with a red a green light on the ends. If you keep the red or the green where they should be when returning then you won't have a problem. The challenge is when returning the two small lights blend in with the towns lights on mainland. In all recent incidents that I am aware of the people who have hit it has not been visitors. Just the opposite they have been locals. It is more a case of complacency not unfamiliarity. Unfortunately often speed and alcohol are involved in tragedies such as these. Furthermore it all too often takes much too long and too many lives to get something like this changed.
