Boats in salt water for 2 months...concerns?

Lasts longer on gas boat.......

Depending upon where you are, it may be necessary. I kind of doubt it in the Va area, but in Florida if you let the boat sit a couple of weeks at a time, bottom paint reduces the need to clean the bottom. You'd have to clean the running gear every 2 weeks where we are if you didn't bottom paint.

Greg,
Don't ignore the salt accumulation on the interior of the cockpit as well. When we run Truly Blessed in salt we always get a fine patina of salt on all the cockpit surfaces, including the helm area-gauges, electronics, etc. A quick wipe down, plus waxing the interior gelcoat, goes a long way towards keeping the boat looking good.

Never thought of this, thanks.

Our first trip out of our temporary marina in the salt water and we hit something. We were idling in the channel when I heard a clanking/scraping noise on the starboard side that lasted about 5 seconds. Sounded like the transmission knocking.

She did not run right during our 30 minute cruise. Starboard engine could not reach WOT and it felt strained. Had her pulled the next day and there was a hung of wire wrapped around the prop. Locals think it was a crab pot, perhaps one that had been cut loose.

The good news is after 3 weeks in the salt water the bottom and running gear was clean, no signs of anything. No damage to the new props either. She ran great on the return trip.

3 weeks and clean? When you say clean what do you mean?

I just had my boat in the salt water for 2 weeks and the water line and below was awful, I spent 6 hours just washing the bottom and still didn't get it all.

There has to be an easier way to clean that funk off I tried a number of different things and I'll tell you I'll be paying someone next time to clean it.

The bottom and running gear looked like it did in December when she was painted. Dockhands were surprised.

You might want to look into what I have my boat in...a boat bunker at boatbunkers.com

There's a lot of barnacle growth as well as algae in the salt and brackish waters in South Florida; and my boat is in the the water year round full time, but with the boatbunker I never have to worry about it, and I flush the engines out inside the bunker as the water once treated with an environmentally friendly enzyme looks like a swimming pool.

It's the 2nd one I've owned, and the first one (a 25' doral I/O) didn't have any bottom paint at all and was perfect about a year later when I pulled it out of the water to sell her.

Just a thought...
Barry

Hey Barry,
How much did your system cost?

Thanks,
Tim
