do i need a chartplotter ? does it let you know of under reefs on the maps for lake erie ? besides charting . for the budget mined is there any nice units under 1200.00 thanks dave

On mine I put in a C-Map and it gives grat detail of Lake Huron when I boat.

A good chartplotter is an essential in my book. Other than cost, the only down side is it discourages use of important skills -- traditional navigation methods.

Whatever model you look at, make sure it either includes detailed charts for your area (zoom into a known area to note the included chart detail), or has charts available at an acceptable cost. The right model Garmin would be fine, but one without the Great Lakes would likely require a 2 or 3 hundred dollar "chip".

Very true! The well next to me was vacant from mid-July through the end of the season. The 46 footer that normally occupies it is equipped with THREE high end plotters, but a little disorientation or distraction or complacency was all it took for him to hit rocks and take out a transmission, shafts, struts, props and rudders.

Nearly every wkd in Sandusky Bay, SeaTow pulls some poor guy off the sandbar. They're usually the types who have a nice plotter, but no idea what those buoy things are...

fig. with plotter & gps you should able to chart you rt then follow you gps . looking at humminbird & lowrance seems like nice units , and with lowrance you can add radar.
