Cracked Manifolds!

No expert here, but wouldn't there be a high likelihood that the block freeze plugs would show signs of damage if the block is damaged?

Good luck!!

Like bonbini said if the block is cracked you wont necessaraly se it on the dip stick. The water sits in the pan the oil floats above it, possibly bellow the oil pickup initally and won't even show in the oil as a bailys irish cream looking liquid. What will happen is that the oil level will go up on the dipstick. If the oil level shows an increase after you run the engine you have a problem.

The freeze plugs might pop out ,if you are lucky, but, 9-times out of 10 the block will crack first, have a friend with a cracked block on a 5.7 , he ground out the crack and J-B welded it,says it ran great all last summer.he couldnt afford a new block so he chose that route, but i wouldnt recommend it if you travel far from port, but it might work well on your cracks temp. on man.

I really appreciate all the responses. I ran the engine just now for about 20 minutes. The oil pressure, engine temp., was normal and the engine ran fine.
Then i checked the dipstick one last time....and it looked like chocolate milk and was half-way up the dipstick.
So now i am just letting it go for whatever i can get for it.
It was a hard lesson learned!

I would buy new manifolds from your local parts shop. Osco/barr are usually less expensive and let him know your situation and ask if the engine is indeed blown if there is a possibility to return them. Is your engine FW cooled (antifreeze) or Raw water cooled. Then I would install new manifolds, about a 2 hour job for a novice, you must have a friend with a boat, then I would suck the old oil and replace asap. Put the hose back on and hope it was just the manifolds. If you are taking in more water then you know you ccoked the block but I wouldn't quit that fast. Anyone want to chime in on that idea? Get the oil out sooner rather than later. Don't run it until oil is changed, once you drain the oil pull the plugs and crank it to get any remaining water out of the cylinders one at a time. YOu must first take the wire off the coil or distributor so the engine wont start, just crank. Clean the sparks plugs adn dry them before re-installing them. Also note which clylinder the water is coming from.
http://www.amarket.com/ These guys offer excellent phone support and have great prices on Aftermarket parts such as GLM/ Osco. Also articles related to this are on their site. At least you can see what the manifolds will cost. I think you still have a chance to save the engine. Good Luck

Well i sold the boat for $600 last nite. After doing the math, and considering what i paid for the boat, and other factors, $600 was about right.
A hard lesson learned and now i'm off to look for another boat! Thanks for all the responses guys, yall were really helpful, i appreciate it.

Rock
Good deal on ditching the boat! As your official tax advisor, I would have recommended you donate it! Even if you're in a 10% tax bracket, you'd have been able to deduct about $800 (assuming book value of $8K). But hey, either way, it's the next guy's problem now. We gonna see you back in boating or are you through for now?
