CSR Northeast Flotilla 2014

Hello Todd,

Thanks for the invite. We may very well take you up on the offer to link up for the trip. I am familiar with Shinnecock Marina, as my boss keeps his boat there during part of the season. I was going to ask him about joining Club Sea Ray and the trip as he has a 2003 Sea Ray 500DA. I can see if he can "hook me up" with a slip for the night if we make the stop over. I am still discussing the trip with the wife to see if we can do it. Out of curiosity, where is your marina?
Thanks again.

Harold

Harold,

Neil & I are in Baypoint marina in Bluepoint. Pauley O is right up the Patchogue River.

I am going to check the tides & hopefully time it so we breeze through Moriches bay at high tide.

John,

We usually have few things going on, which include all you've described above and some more . I'm planning to list them in our "Daily Compass", which I'll share with everyone later on. Drinking? This is a "dry gang..."...:smt043...but there's no way we'll miss things like "wine tasting" and "martini tasting" parties...., just to name the few.

In addition, I was going to throw an idea and see what you guys think. We maintain our usual tradition, which transitioned from our rendezvous in to a Flotilla kick off party, AKA "The Feast Of The East". I was thinking that it would be a good idea to have a "End of the Flotilla Party" on the Block. Looking at everyone's preliminary plans, it seems that even though we'll miss few people in West Neck Harbor, we'll have almost everyone join/re-unite with the Flotilla in Block. So, this got me thinking about the end of the Flotilla party on the last day.

Since this would be an event at the end of the trip, I think the easiest way to do it would be catering. So, if you guys think that this is a good idea in general, let's brainstorm the places as possible candidates. Even though we'll have a large group, reserving a place in advance shouldn't be an issue.

Alex,
I like the idea of an end of the trip party but, can we do it on the second to last day? If I can reserve WH bath and tennis I will be departing Block a day early to get two days at the resort. Otherwise we may miss it.

Todd,

As long as everyone is on board with the whole idea of having the end of the trip party, the rest is just details that we'll work out. The actual date of the party will of course depend on availability for the majority. If we have number of people that need to leave a day early, then of course it makes sense to do the party while we still have everyone present.

I guess, now I'll need to add another column to the spreadsheet [Date Leaving Block], so we can have a clear pic on who's living when, and use it as a deciding factor.

Well, I'm not going to know for certain when I am leaving Block. As it stands now, I have to wait until the middle of April to see if there is transient availability at WH Bath & Tennis. If we can't get in there I'll prob stay at block the 4 nights then head to WH Town marina and home the next day.

Got you, that's not a problem, Todd. We've got plenty of time.

Alright guys, it's time to get the choice of marina in Mystic settled.

Here are the results of my findings (BTW, thanks Ross for the help) along with my view on the docking arrangement there.

Mystic Shipyard West:
Pros:

  • Very reasonably priced. $2.50 p/f + electric ($5 for 30amp, $7 for 50amp)
  • There’s a picnic area to accommodate catering and also 8 grills if we wish to do BBQ on site.
  • Has a pool.
  • No bridges to deal with.
  • They have no problem finding room for the group, including 60+ footers we might have in the fleet.
  • Has anchorage near by, but with limited depth (3.5’-4’ at MLW). People from anchorage will have no issue join the rest of the group in the marina.
  • Kitchen Little is 3 min dinghy ride for those that wish to have breakfast or lunch there. They said that they can do catering to MSY, if we would like.
Cons:

  • Located further away from the Seaport and the town. I was told that it’s about 15 min walk to town and 30 min walk to Seaport. So, dinghy or a cab will be primary transportation options.

Mystic River Marina:
Pros:

  • Reasonably priced. $2.80 p/f + electric (1[SUP]st[/SUP] 30amp is free, 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] 30amp is $20, but 50amp is $40 p/d)
  • Clubhouse will be available for us, if needed.
  • Has a pool
  • They have no problem finding room for the group, including 60+ footers we might have in the fleet.
  • Kitchen Little is on premises and has shown interest in doing the catering. Based on some reviews, this is very small restaurant which specializes on breakfast and lunch and gets crowded fast.
  • No bridges to deal with.
  • The same anchorage as MSY, but it’s just a bit further away from the marina. Folks will be allowed to join the rest of the group in the marina.
Cons:

  • Located further away from the Seaport and the town. I was told that it’s about 15-20 min walk to town and 30+ min walk to Seaport. So, dinghy or a cab will be primary transportation options.

Seaport Marine:
Pros:

  • Reasonably priced. $2.50 p/f + electric ($10 for 30amp and $20 for 50amp).
  • Located in walking or short dinghy ride to the Seaport village and the town.
  • Clubhouse will be available for us, if needed.
  • Only RR bridge to deal with.
Cons:

  • The group most likely will be placed in the older section with old wooden docks and possibly exposed to river traffic.
  • No pool.
  • No anchorage near by.

Mystic Seaport Marina:
Pros:

  • Conveniently located next to the museum/village and the town.
  • The group likely will be placed together, but may require rafting in the slip.
  • Limited anchorage is available for those who don’t need a marina. But will have to pay admission fee to use the museum.
  • Restaurant on premises and others within walking distance.
Cons:

  • $4.50 p/f, which is almost double the price compare to other marinas in the area.
  • No clubhouse and/or picnic area, in case if we decide to cater dinner.
  • No pool.
  • Dependency on two bridge openings, although RR Bridge should remain open unless there’s a train coming.

Here’s my point of view on the docking arrangement here.

Anchorage:
Considering the fact that we not looking to through a formal feast, some folks might look at this as being similar situation as in Block and consider anchoring. As you can see, there are two anchorage areas. One all the way in the Northern section of the Mystic Seaport and the other is right across from Mystic Shipyard Marina. I read some reviews and talked to the harbor master to get most accurate info. So, besides know fact that both anchorages present limited space challenge, the bigger challenge is the depth.

The anchorage by Seaport is smaller, but there’s just slightly larger room with more water (4’-5’ at MLW).
The anchorage by MSY has larger area, but it has less water (3.5’-4’ at MLW).

Even though the harbor master says the bottom is soft mud, I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t feel comfortable having my boat with about 4’ draft potentially sit in the mud and have genny suck the silt (not to mention have a risk of prop damage). In addition, we have to expect that there’s a good chance for other boats being anchored, which will limit our chance of having a raft. So, for these reasons I would not use this as my plan A and I’m voting for using one of the marinas from the list above.

Marinas:
As you can see, we have a list of solid 4 candidates and we need to make the choice which one of them fits our needs best.

Considering that we have a group with mixed interests, I don’t think we need to be focused so much just on the Seaport. I’ve tried outline the Pros and Cons to help us make the decision easier. Let’s use the “process of elimination”.

Mystic Seaport Marina – Most expensive and other than having best location (in relation to museum and the town) it offers less to the group in general. I’m sure that we’ll have plenty of people (mostly adults) who have seen the museum and since we’ll be going to Napatree Beach for one day, it makes no sense to pay the premium for the marina. Plus, two bridges to deal with. So, I’m voting NO for this one.

Seaport Marine – Good prices, good location, has a Clubhouse, but no pool. I’ve stayed in this marina before and it’s nothing to brag about. So, I’m voting NO for this one as well.

So, it’s a puzzling choice between Mystic Shipyard West and Mystic River Marina. Both marinas are reasonably priced and offer pretty much everything what we’re looking for in terms of accommodations. Both marinas seem to have very nice management who’s willing to make our stay a positive experience, and of course appreciate our business. Location is somewhat debatable. For those that will go to the seaport one day and those that will tour the town it’s a nice dinghy ride or just get cab. But, having a large group it’s convenient IN/OUT, especially if we’ll be taking couple of boats to the Napatree Beach.

For some having Kitchen Little on premises of MRM could sound like a selling point, but it’s a 3 min dinghy ride just across the river from Shipyard Marina. Since we’ll have quite few dinghies deployed anyway, doing this quick hop would not be an issue.

Price wise, MRM is a little more money (more for those that need 50amp). MRM is also just a bit further from the town and seaport museum. I have not stayed in these two and don’t even remember how they look while passing them by. But, I think these two deserve a visit. Preliminary I’ll vote P1 for MSY and P2 for MRM.

I’ve expressed my opinion, so let’s hear yours.

Transient fees and bridges are not a deal breaker for me, but after the 102+ temps we had at the LL event a pool is something to think about.
My votes:
P1 Mystic Shipyard West
P2 Mystic Seaport Marina

For those that may want to visit the museum, do you know off hand if they will let people tie up a dinghy for the day and pay the museum admission fee?

Rich

With all the kids in the crowd I'd rule out anyplace without a pool. My 2c

Thanks for quick response, Rich. As far as I know, there's a dinghy dock next to or right at the museum. So, you just tie up and go to the window to pay your admission fee. This is what I will be doing, most likely on the day of our arrival, living the beach for the following day (of course weather dependent).

That was exactly my thought as well, Chuck. Despite the fact that we're planning to do one beach day at Napatree, it's always nice to have a pool on premises.

Mystic Shipyard West sounds good to me for P1. I have no P2 yet

That's good enough, Greg. We can always wait for P2.

We'll go with:

P1 Mystic Shipyard West
P2 Mystic Seaport Marine

It could be blazing hot at this time of year, so a pool is a definite plus.

Thanks Dale.

Keep your votes coming, guys.

No worries Greg, Alex will just put your vote where "he" thinks it should go! LOL...

So, I take it that's your way of voting for MSY as P1 too? Oh crap.....you're not going...but you want to....:smt100.....

Alex,
We would enjoy a formal end of trip event in block. We will be departing first thing Sunday morning the 17th.

Even though I have not confirmed I can attend, I would vote for MRM as my P1. I ate at Kitchen Little the last time I was at Mystic (by car) in October and looked around the marina. It seemed very nice and the staff even over the winter was very friendly and accommodating. My wife and I considered this a "must stay" when we made it up there by boat (as was the Seaport Museum). That being said, I would be comfortable with MSY if the votes go that way based on the info provided as I have never been there.

P1=MSW
P2=MRM. Seems like a no brainer, I have to deal with bridges and if we can avoid them I'd like to.
