Boat Info
2012 Sundancer 450
Engines
Twin Cummins 480 diesels
Joystick docking
Are these big enough for a 2004 Sundancer 40 model that will be used cruising the Gulf Islands off Vancouver Island?

I'm an east coast guy but I'll take a stab and say, "why not?" Not exactly a trans-Pacific crossing. If I'm not interpreting where you will boat wrong, looks like the distance across the Straight of Georgia/Salish Sea is about 20 miles. The hardtop adds weight but it appears that the boat weighs under 20k lbs dry, and unless you were looking at this boat with gassers, I can't see why it would be a problem.

Heck, I'm wondering if you couldn't do it in your 340.

Wow, thought I had replied to this but don't see it. Certainly would love to know franks thoughts in his PM's!

Before buying our 44, we sea trialed a 2005 39 with the 380's (same hull as 07 40). While we thought the performance was "fine" coming from a 30kt cruise boat we were slightly concerned it wouldn't be enough, but the boat came on plane easy and handled fine (that being said it was in VERY light trim with 4 POB).

While looking at the 39/40's we were hoping to find one with the 425's. Turned out we were going to pay a premium for a 40 with diesels in the northeast, and with only one with 425's for sale, we bit the bullet and went for a 44 and couldn't be happier, for the $40-45K extra we get a solid door to the second stateroom, a second head and a fantastically performing boat that has cockpit AC and Heat!

It appears that you may have received Frank's opinion via PM, but for the benefit of others who might read this and be interested, I think the QSB 5.9s are fine for what you doing. From google maps, it looks like the islands are close to each other with few more than 5 miles apart from the next closest. That means range shouldn't be a huge issue. Tide/current also appear to not be outside the norms for what this boat can handle. With the QSBs you will have a very reliable power plant albeit I do admit that they are somewhat underpowered in my opinion. However, it is not substantially underpowered where it impacts performance or safety (load utilization factor). The boat planes quickly and is very well balanced and extremely maneuverable at 20 knots AND when docking. Having stepped-up from a 280 with twin 5.0,s I knew the 40 would not be able to go as fast as I may want to if the waters are flat and winds are right. So what? The slightly slower pace is fine by me... it allows me to enjoy the ride. (That was Frank W's advice to me when I asked the same question years ago...!)

If you had to run longer distances and at a higher speed (ie higher load %) where you would be pushing on these engines a bit too much, for too long, I think the equation might be different and larger engines would probably make sense.

rronds, thanks for response. To clarify my current boating situation, long story short, the 340 I had in Florida was sold last Sept. My wife was ill, and was requiring double lung transplant to live. If lucky enough to get donated lungs, she would never get out of country insurance, hence we sold the U.S. Moored boat.
Fast forward to today, we were blessed to receive donated lungs, and my wife underwent successful double lung transplant surgery July 31st! We have a 3 month rehabilitation period but then are anxious to get back to our passion of boating!
PS, if we buy the 40DA it has to be transported from Ottawa, Ontario to Vancouver, BC, a distance of 3,000 miles, at a cost of $18,900!

I can only add that I have this combination and have no complaints pertaining to the power / range / efficiency (can you use that term pertaining to boating?). If you'd like details happy to answer questions.

Thanks for all the responses. I want to make special thanks to our resident expert Frank W!
i know there has been lots of kudos given to Frank over the 5 years I've been a member, but I truly think he is a GREAT AMBASSADOR for CSR!!!
through many PMs Frank has provided me the confidence to move forward on this purchase!
now to transport this monster over 3,000 miles to Vancouver!

Did you buy this boat on Long Island. It was in the same canal I was in. Owner took real good care of it. Good luck.

We purchased our 07 40 in April of this year. We cruised down from mystic ct. To just south of Annapolis. 420 knt miles. 5.5 hours running the Atlantic coast in 3 to 6 4 miles off shore and she handled like a champ. Cruised at 2600 rpm and didn't miss a beat at about 20-21 knots. We love the 380. Sure doesn't everyone want to go faster but we're liking cruise and burn. Btw we also have the extra stern weight of a sea lift hydraulic platform
