Hey guys, looking for some advice on dealing with my insurance.. Just to set the scene, i work in the export business and i keep my boat at work outside on a trailer.
While poking around outside today i noticed the front of my trailer on the floor with my electric tongue jack folded in half beneath it.

I went back to the DVR and observed a tractor trailer from next door come to make a u turn on my side of the building. My security guard was busy sleeping in his vehicle(6am) in the middle of the parking lot causing the driver to have to do a 4 point turn so to speak. With him making 2 of those points he slammed into my trailer twice! Pushing the boat into one of the closed bay doors. Luckily my swim platform is above the dock, but one of the props got slammed into the metal dock leveler and bent the prop, also gouging the dock leveler. The drive took a pretty hard hit and now im concerned about it down the line. The electric jack up front is bent in half, and the tounge is messed up because i can no longer get it to open./...
You would have thought that the sound of the trailer slamming into the concrete would have woken the security guard up, nopeeeee. after a few more attempts the driver woke him up to move out of the way so he could maneuver the trailer out ( didnt mention anything about hitting my trailer, and i know he felt it cause he hit it HARD)

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Waiting for the shipping line to get back to me with the driver information. Hopefully he will want to cooperate. I want to give him a chance to do the right thing so i have not reported a hit and run as of yet.

Hopefully you have not moved the boat yet. I would report it to my insurance company immediately and let them know you have footage of the accident. Some insurance companies take it as a sign if you dont report it ASAP, it's not that important to you and in the end, to them.

jesus sorry to hear that. Can't offer much in the way of the insurance but you're on the right track with your thoughts on the outdrive. Make sure as part of the repairs they check for propshaft alignment and leaks in the seals. A shot like that can definitely cause some unseen issues

Agreed! Report it right away and save the video. Provide it to them for their investigation. FYI, I run a claims department for a major ins. company and will can answer questions you may have moving forward.

Tell the shipping line that one of their drivers hit your boat, tell your insurance that one of the shipping lines drivers hit your boat. Tell them both you got it on tape and want your stuff fixed.

Woody has it. I was involved in a hit and run a few years ago. Another drive got the whole thing on their cell phone and stopped, gave me and the police the info. My first call to the other drivers insurance was a bit of denial - how do you know it was our insured yada yada. I emailed them the video - they shut up and fixed things pretty quick. A picture is worth a thousand words.

A repair shop damaged my boat in 2015. They did not fix it. I reported it to my insurance company and expected them to get the boat fixed. They tried but the shop did not fix the boat. I got the insurance payout this year. I asked the agent why they did not collect from the shop they said it would cost them more to collect than pay the claim. With auto it seems different they seem to go after the other party and get their money. When you report it to your insurance company ask them if they will go after the other party and if they say no make sure they list your claim as no fault to you.

thanks for all the responses guys, called the insurance this morning, they want a police report, also talked with the owner of the company and he was very apologetic and willing to pay for the damages, either out of pocket or through his insurance, depending on how much it comes out to

What a bummer. That's a good sign from the owner though. I'd also suggest that it's very likely that the driver didn't know he had hit the boat, esp if he hit your trailer with his. (if he did it with his truck, that would be harder to deny)

There were a couple drivers in the past year that hit the corner of the building where my business is. One was a hit & run, the other guy called his supervisor to tell him but didn't come into my business to tell my employee. Another customer saw it & alerted her. In both cases they ripped my camera right off the side of the building. I had them both clearly on video & both companies paid my landlord without a fight.
