Digital Tachs

No, I just made a note of the actual hours in the log and started over when writing hours on things like the oil and fuel filters. I just know that I have to add 2150 hours to everything.
I’ll give the old tachs to whoever buys the boat.

Mark,

Any chance you remember the dip switch settings on the back? I think Aetna is saying 127 but wanted to see what you did for your install?

Thanks

Hi Steve, Mine are the 8905R-P-H-DS
R=round
P=polished (stainless bezel)
H=hour meter
DS=diesel
Install was easy and I am very pleased with them although the port side hour meter doesn't light up as much as the starboard. But I've been told by other members here that their hour meters don't light at all???
This is what they look like in our boats.

As mentioned, they are about 3/16” shy of being a perfect fit. 4 or 5 wraps of electrical tape around the gauge body will center it while you tighten down the U bracket.
The hour meter back lighting is not as drastically different as depicted in the picture, the crappy cell phone pic just makes it look bad.

Interesting reading the discussion on the Aetna digital tachs. I have a a question for anyone with exprience with these tachs. Before I start the engines I let the tach go thru its diagnostics, which are fine. Then when I start the engine the RPM display may or may not display the RPMs ( display goes blank ) however the HR meter gauge is still functioning. Sometimes the display will stay on for a few minutes or some times not. Model 8901
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Bruce

Aetna has an excellent technical service department. Suggest you call them and I'd bet they can talk you thru a simple solution.

Aetna's start at zero and cannot be reset. I just kept my oem tachs to prove engine hours to the new owner.

Just wanted to chime in here. I spoke with Aetna last year (haven’t yet pulled the trigger) and they can preprogram the hour meters, so they ship with the current hours on the displays. Just remember to install port and starboard tachs in the correct locations! Doing this mod after you winterize is a great time because your hours won’t be changing for a few months!

That seem to be a new service. I asked about it after I had to replace one Aetna. They declined to do it then, stating it was an expensive process. Just be sure you ask the cost before committing.

This was just last winter. Knowing a little about embedded systems, software and programming memories, this shouldn't be hard for them at all. But then, it all depends on how they designed the system and if they want to take an additional step like this.

Another option is they can add labels/text to the face of the display. So if it was too much to get them to pre-program a starting value, they could always put a label in the tach face that said something like:

PORT
Add 1749.2 hours

STARBOARD
Add 1751.5 hours

Don't laugh... it's a real option!

thanks for the information everyone, having Aetna program the new tach with the previous hrs sounds like a no brainer. Sure would eliminate a lot of discussion later on.

Much appreciated everyone. thanks
