I don’t get it. I would still be using dinosaur juice to charge it with my generator running more… Not for my boating lifestyle.
 
I think they are dipping their toe into the pool. The water is too cold to get in though.
There for a while I saw a lot of those Torqeedo electric motors on dinghys but now never see them.

We need another level in electrical energy storage density to make any of this really viable.

In the name of "environmental"?? I don't have the vision yet.....
 
I think there's a certain market for this kind of boat. Perhaps a bit niche, and definitely not for every application.

I agree the funny thing is it has been around for years already. It is called a “Duffy” wine and cheese cruiser.

Oh, come on now. A Duffy is truly a wine cruiser for just floating along. Tops out at 6 mph. At least the Highfield has potential for some actual fun and to be used as a tender. Tops at 25 mph which feels really fast that low to the water.

I could see someone with a dock on a lake using this for some fun time. It should be literally plug and play - no worries about carburetors and other maintenance. Maybe also as a tender for a larger yacht that has a toy garage?
 
Ya, like b_ said, i think EV are fine for sailboaters that only need to get ashore and back. They hate engines.
My zodiac like a lot of others on here is a 2nd boat. I’ll go out on weekday mornings and run around for 4 - 5 hours. An EV will never be practical for me needs in my lifetime.
I would love to take Joe out on an EV some summer morning, when it runs out of juice after 1/2 hour, he can row us for the next 4.5 hours.
 
I think I told you guys last year .... I picked up the 7.5 Merc Avator electric outboard to try on my skiff, which is only 100 lbs empty. Best case scenario, I get 5 miles on a full charge. It does 5mph at WOT -- for an hour -- which you have to do because 5mph is already too slow. I don't go far, for fear of running out of battery. A spare battery is 1K so I didn't bother. I just got a recall notice from Merc, saying it needs an electronics update because in some cases the battery won't charge.

It would be great for someone who uses a dink to get back/forth to their mooring. Or someone at anchor that just wants to get to shore. It's lightweight and does have some cool features. But distance and speed ain't included!

There are lots more practical ways to get to a mooring and back. You could for example buy an old 13’ Boston Whaler for around $4,500 as a to and from that would have a lot of utility beyond that simple task. You wouldn’t even have to do any hull or brightwork maintenance on it if you used it only to get to your mooring can.
 
We put a torqeedo on the dinghy for my wife to use and she loves it. I don’t have to worry about maintaining it. She can install it by herself. Start it by herself and clean it. It has enough range for her to get from the boat to the public docks and also to hit up her favorite beach spot all while I do something else.

it’ll do 6knts at 50% throttle or 7knts at 100%. She runs at 6 and gets three times the range

It’s also nearly silent. Which is cool for robbing the local sailboats at night


It’s not as fast as my 8hp Yamaha (which we kept for longer excursions) but it’s a whole lot less work and aggravation.

Im good with all of that.

Imagine for a moment that some Green Policy Nut in the current Administration convinces the President to mandate "only electric boats" for the USCG and water Police in the US.

"We got your distress call on 16.....bad news .....it is outside our rescue boat's range....... If you start swimming about 5 miles toward land.....we might be able to reach you. Let us know when you are there."

That's not lost on me! A 13' Whaler is the boat I use the most now. It gets great mileage and goes almost anywhere. It's also super easy to trailer anywhere.
