So Cal
I have a 1989 Searay 180 Open bow, that needs some work. The guy that had it before me changed the fuel tank. Problem is two fold:
1)It looks like HE welded it together in his garage (its not square ect) which makes me concerned about the quality/safety.
2) It doesnt have a sending unit, so I have no clue how much fuel is left as I turn circles around the lake.

Moller says they most likley have the tank, but without a part number they cant tell me. /strike one. So off to Searay.com. Got the part manual, but...its a scan and the part number for the tank is missing/illegible. /strike two Called the 800 number that I have for Searay, and they say they are closed for a holiday  what holiday? /strike three.

Ok CSR...your up.

Any help?

Can you measure the tank? If so, I would guess someone could either find a replacement or build another one. Maybe they could just alter the one that you have? If it's home made, have a REAL welder pull it out, fill it with water and finish it. Cut a hole for a new sender and you should be good to go. Might cost less than a new tank, but I agree I would be worried about the craftsmenship! There's not that much to welding up a tank, but the guy should have put the sender back in!

1989 180 OB parts list says 20 gallon tank is part #11930

MWPH: Is that from the Searay.com parts list, or do you have the same boat with the origial manuals?

If its from the web site I have two concerns, first is that all the rest of the parts numbers have 6 didgits, is the scan just missing one? Second, I know for sure that the current tank is only 12 gallons. Since I drained it and filled it with...well...12 gallons lol. Would hate to order the 20 gal and have it not fit.

To Sundancer: ya it looks like I will have to do exactly what you suggeted. Measure it ect and hope Moeller can find the one from all the info I have.

The Sea Ray parts list may have both numbers........the one in the part" column is Sea Ray's internal part number and is useless in sourcing stuff anywwhere except from Sea Ray.

Figure out the factory the boat was made in and call customer service at that number and talk to someone. Post your HIN # and I or someone else will tell you. Just because you caught them closed on one day does not mean you can't get the information you need. The other way is to email customer service and simply ask them to tell you the original vendor and vendor's part number.

I've just done the same thing on a fuel sender issue (my boat is a '96) and it took all of 30 seconds on the phone to get not only the vendor's name but their part number and a contact person at the vendor.
