Good Automatic Windlass

The windlass on my Sea Ray 400 EC has quit. I checked with Good Automatic Windlass, they can repair the original unit or upgrade it to a rope/chain model . Any recommendations?

It depends upon whether or not you really need chain. The advantage is better holding with shorter scope. However, if you typically anchor in shallow water with a soft or sandy bottom, then you may be like me and prefer an all rope rode. The advantage is quicker time to set the anchor and much faster take up when you pull up the anchor. I typically anchor in 15 ft or less of water over a sandy bottom and let out about 10X scope and the boat stays put. With the Good free drop I can drop and set my anchor in 1/3 the time others with chain can. When leaving, I can idle up to the anchor and the windlass just about keeps up with the boat. This is helpful in crowded anchorages. This situation is perfect for me, but may not work for you.

Other Good factors to consider is with your free drop all rope windlass you can upgrade the motor to a 4 pole motor, upgrade to a faster gear set and the sealed solenoid control pack for a few hundred $$ when you have your windlass rebuilt. You will get a stronger pull and much faster line handling with the upgrades. This is also a good time to consider buying a new line from Good. You get a discount if you do it at the same time your windlass is rebuilt.

The other thing to know is that Good does in fact remanufacture your windlass when you send it in to them in NJ. It isn't worth trying to open the case and repair it yourself. In fact, I kept the shipping carton and I send my windlass in to them every 5-6 years to have it serviced. They are great people and have a superior product.

I had Good install one of their rope/chain windlass on my boat a couple of years ago. I absolutely loved that thing.
