Help setting up Direct TV at Home and Boat

Sounds like good progress. FWIW, my account has always referenced the "boat" receiver - it's never been an issue for me.

Do you have an iPad? DirecTV has a free app that allows you to program and control many of the newer h-receivers.

Not yet. Still in stone ages with phones. Kind of happy that way too. May change some day.

Update:

Here is a quote from a KVH technician, "In your house, networking can be done by using DTV SWiM system, but the KVH does not use this system, so you have to network the receivers via cat5, (assuming you will have at least one HDDVR and one HD.)

This is from the KVH HD7 pdf Brochure. They say it is single wire multi-switch technology. Is there different types of swim switches??:huh::huh:

Oh man you guys are making a simple installation awful complicated. Now maybe up here in Canada things may work different, but my setup is very simple. Assuming you have a satellite or cable feed at home, you buy a Slingbox at around $159. http://www.slingmedia.com/
It connects to your cable/sat system and your at home internet.
Then, when at the marina you can subscribe to their WIFI or when away from your home port, as I have a turbo stick from Bell, I can log into my home Slingbox from anywhere and watch my home tv through the internet and the Slingbox software......for no cost, except for what ever it costs for the WIFI or my turbo stick, which costs about $32 a month. Simple. No wires, antennas or dishes required. Just run an HDMI from my laptop to the tv and presto. We use it when we travel to Europe or this past year on a cruise and it worked great. Works anywhere in the world you can get an internet hookup. Worth a look.

That is a good type of system if you can get internet, like when you're docked at the marina. If you are out on the hook that may not be possible. I know that some of my local coastal areas also have no Cellular reception. This makes it tough to get internet. Hampton would probably still neeed a dish to get his internet. I for one am very happy with my Tracvision. It really completes making the boat a home away from home for my family

I just went through a week of hell with our local installers for the house Direct TV. I called on Monday to get 2 boxes replaced and Direct schedules me for 4-8 on Wednesday evening. Guys show up early and tries to force his way into the house. My wife calls the installation company and registers a complaint. They send the same guy back out while I'm home in the evening. I let him install the boxes as I know I will never get the TV working if I don't. He replaces 2 boxes that are faulty and leaves before the updates are completely downloaded into the boxes. The boxes go into update mode every 15 minute, for the next 2 days.

I call Direct and they schedule another call for this Friday. The tech calls at 1:00 in the afternoon and says he is off and they should not have scheduled him. We call Direct again and they promised someone to come before 8:00pm that night. Guess what "no one shows". Called direct again and they promised another tech to come this morning.
They sent a new guy out who replaced my pickup, splitter box and the 2 new boxes. The new updates went through without a hitch.

I do blame the contracted installation company more then Direct TV but the poor folks at Direct received the brunt of the admiral’s rage.
Aint no way I’d let this installation company work on an RV or boat.

OS,
I feel your pain brother. The problem is that they contract everything out. When they did my initial install it took 3 days. Everything would work except the HD DVR. That installation software does not let the install complete unless it gets a strong signal on all 3 satellites it receives. I had 2 managers work on it the last 2 days. It turns out the last thing they replace is the problem. The dome actually had a BB size ding in it that was affecting one of the transponders.

The first installer they sent was working for the company 3 weeks. He told me they get paid by the job, not the hour. Therefore they are motivated to get out of there asap to make more $$. The managers first thing was to move my dish up. I now have the original base installed on my roof with no dish. They left it so I would not get leaks. In all fairness the manager of the installation company offered to pay to have the roof repaired but, I declined. I can't see it from the ground and I felt bad that they were there for 3 days. They all were very professional and apologetic. I told them " $#!t happens"!

I should know that it only take one bad apple to give a company a bad name. I must say the second tech did everything I would expect. He let me know what he was doing and the items he would be replacing. Also was very professional.

The admiral is still carrying a vendetta for Direct though.

Hello All, Id like to know what others have had this experience and what they did about it. I had KVH satellite TV system installed on my Sea Ray by a marina back in 2016. KVH themselves activated my direct tv account. I paid $200 per receiver and $49 per remote control. I paid for them and have a receipt showing this. This season I did not put the boat in the water and I got tired of dealing with their 6 month suspension issues. If you forget to contact them the bill starts rolling. So rather than continuing to suspend their service ever 6 month, I cancelled it and advised I would call back next year to re-activate it. Then of course I get an early termination fee for ending the contract early. I just spent over an hour on the phone with them arguing with Direct tv and talking to 3 different people because they want my equipment back. I paid $500 bucks for this equipment and its mine I have a paid receipt. They disagree and want it back, I told them I have my receipt, I signed no such agreement and i'm not sending it back. I offered to return the dish cards in the receiver as a gesture to resolve the issue, that was not good enough. They still want the receivers back and sent me a bill for $95 for non return of equipment I bought. In the end we agreed to disagree and the call ended. Very frustrating, Directv as a company sucks. I told them to send me $500 and I will uninstall the equipment, of course thats not happening. I challenged the "Lease" payment on the first months bill, after talking to a bunch of them they told me in my situation it was basically a service fee per receiver., so I kept paying it despite owning the equipment. Curious if anyone else has had this nightmare and what became of it.

A few years ago I bought a KVH TV1 for the boat for around $2000. It included my choice of either a Direct TV or Dish receiver. I had/have Direct TV at home so I picked the Direct TV receiver. That receiver then was added to my home plan at an additional $7 per month lease charge. Direct TV (not KVH) did all the receiver setup with me over the phone. That call went great, smooth and quick.

So, I believe the satellite company gives the receivers to KVH to bundle and then you monthly lease it when you activate it. But, hey, I could be wrong.
