Boat Info
2005 260 Sundancer. 2003 F250 Super Duty V10 Ford Tow. 5.0 KW Kohler genset. Old school Naman GPS.
Engines
350 MAG MPI, Bravo 2 drive.
Well, was trolling along and put her in neutral while I was pulling up to my put in dock and the engine quit. Started her back up and she ran for about 10 sec and died again. Got VERY lucky and was aside the dock so I could get a line on a cleat and was able to secure.
Thank goodness I read the ENTIRE 260 Dancer thread before I purchased my girlfriend and had another IAC on board. Switched it out in about 10 minutes. She started back up and idled fine and I was able to get her on the trailer and put her away.
Pheew!!
I figure had I not known what to do from reading that thread I would have been out ohh say:

- Sea ray dealer has mobile service = $150.00 to come out then I think $85/hr.
- Parts, I paid $98.00 for spare, but that doesn't count since I already had it.

So, we'll call it $235 to start. Never mind if the tech was unable to diagnose and told me i had to take her in.

THANKS CSR!!!!!!

I read that thread and it said nothing about purchasing a girlfriend. I though you rented girlfriends and bought wives? LOL

FYI - you only NEED one spare. IAC's can be cleaned and work just fine afterwards. It only takes a little mild degreaser (carb cleaner works well), and small scrub brush and some elbow grease. They get a light carbon build up, and restrict air flow, this is what creates the stall or rough idle condition. Remove the carbon, and you are good to go.

I think I almost threw up from laughing at that one. Well, I bought the girlfriend (boat) and the wife is no longer being paid off, so I have that going for me.

Ahhh, did not realize that!! So, I guess I'll clean up the old one and see if it works just as well as the new one.

For the most part, you are exactly right. But sometimes (about 25% of the time) the motor burns out or feezes up also. It's a small motor that is constantly working to keep the idle correct. Carrying one though is generally all you need.

I have seen alot about the IAC's going out. At about how many hours does this usually happen? I am right about 150 hrs.

I have an '89 220DA, with carbureted 5.7 Mercruiser. Does anyone know if there's a similar IAC on this engine? Also, since boating on a lake, I'm never more than 1/2 hr. from the dock. Is this something that I can wait until I get back to the dock to deal with?

Wow, my starbrd iac went out at exactly 150 hours. Port is still going fine, for now... Fortunately Premium Certified Warranty took care of this one.

Idle Air Controllers ae not uised on carbureted engines.

They are only used on engines with throttle body injectors or multi port injectors. And they are not used on engines with Digital Throttle Sytems either.

Mine gave out right at 150 hours last year.

The Starboard one went bad one weekend -- took boat to dealer, replaced it under warranty. The Port one went bad thirty minutes into the next outing. (again, replaced under warranty, but what a pain!).

My local dealer told me that it depends on how much you "idle" to determine how long they last. They recommended not keeping the boat in idle for long periods, but slightly bump up the throttle, so you are doing idle speed, but giving the engines an extra RPM. They claimed the IAC will last longer if you do this....

OK..I've been holding off asking this question, but I'm going to swallow my pride and ask....what is a IAC, sounds like something I want to keep on board. Thanks

Just looked at hour meter, I am at 348. I do boat year around however. I don't know if it makes any difference, but I have been using the marine Stabilize product ever since I have had the boat and religiously use the injector cleaner. Again, NO IDEA if that matters, but that's what I have been doing.
