I think it would look best if mounted on a pole of some type. Garmin may have something.....

Although it comes with a wide base for mounting, I like the pole idea, this could help elevate things and possibly reduce the amount holes I'd have to drill

That base is substantial. You may have better luck renting it to see if it works to your liking.
