This is sort of boating related. Last week AP Moeller, the parent of Maersk Line, announced the purchase of 10 new ships to be built by Daewoo in Korea. These ships will be the largest containerships ever built with a capacity of 18,000 TEU. Maersk has put up an infomercial website that explains the ships and will update the site as the ships are constructed. It really is kind of neat.

So if anyone wants to follow the construction of big boy boats ...

Would have been nice if we could be building them...

It looks big, it sounds big, and those funny little foreign measurements make it measure big too. :smt043

Neat post, Thanks, MM

400meters = 1,312' 4" ...right, it looks longer in feet! :grin::grin::grin:

Years ago, those ships might have been built by Americans, manned by Americans and also sailing into American ports. But now they're built by and operated by foreigners. Also, they're too big for American ports. Oh well.

I hope they install machine gun turrets to eliminate those nice folks in Somolian waters.

Makes you wonder about the insurance industry.

With today's economics. . .not a chance!

It's hard to believe that we used to be able to make engines like this in America.......as a matter of fact, it's hard to believe we made anything in this country .....OSHA, EPA, Unions........Oh well.

Its not clear. Maersk and Daewoo are both being very coy as to what the actual power package will be. Daewoo has been experimenting with LNG fueled engine technology and there is some speculation that some of these ships may be working prototypes.

Hell, try OSHPD (Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development) who here in California creates codes and regulations that make building hospitals cost twice what it did less than 10 years ago!
