We boated here for two years. I remember our very first day in the water was July 3rd. I was never so terrified as I was that day. Boats were coming at us from every direction and every speed.
One of my biggest pet peeves is someone following too close. Boats and skis are not cars! They don't have break lights!!!

PLEASE BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!

Its getting crazier out on the water every year. :smt021

Dee & I are doing the NYS canal only this year.

The rental jet skis are te worst. No training And they dart around like rats. I almost killed one with the formula he came out of now are and stopped right in front of me when I was running 70mph. 30 foot of boat does not stop like a car. I bet he needed to change his shorts when I mised him by about 10 feet

Sorry to read that, do hope he's doing ok. All boats are dangerouos if not operated correctly but to run over a jet skier.............good lord! We have a lot of rental jet skiers here and quite a few are in awful accidents from time to time...so sad and avoidable. Our son's friend lost his brother to a jet ski accident from jumping wake.....really tragic. Am beginning to wonder if we should just put the old 340 in the swimming pool in the back yard and just use her in it to be safe:)

this happened a few years ago but the result was the same. K Hovanian`s son, on a ski, at night, alcohol involved went thru a sail boat.
he died instantly, the sailboat sunk quickly.

BT...the builder?

As far as the rentals go around Somers Point and the back bays of Ocean City, they have a small area that they have to stay in. What a waste of money!! They rent these skis for an hour, ride in circles and bring it back in. :smt017

yep,I just happened to be admitted that same night,, not a pretty site

Somehow I remember hearing about that.....I'm sure it wasn't! My sister was in the hospital ER waiting one night when a fatality came in.... she can't get it out of her head all these years later

I don't know if you follow local NJ news, but K. Hovnanian's son, ALton, died Monday night. Here's a kid that had everything to live for. He plugged a, lighted, moored sailboat in the side at speed on a jet ski. It passed right into the cabin and was still stuck inside when it was raised. The kid was 15 years old and in the paper the quote was he was an "experienced" boater. It was done in the evening I understand and I know the sailboat, it's been mooring in the same place for 25 years, by the Ocean Point Bridge on the Navisink.

How can a 15 year old be experienced in anything, much less operation of machinery?

Let's face it, we need a boaters license - a real one, I got an endoresement on my NJ license. Only had to pay 10 bucks I think and now I'm "licensed" - you don't even need that. I can't tell you how many fools are "red, right, recking" in my local waters.

Self policing has never and will not ever work.

That's my retirement plan. When I am old and senile, I am going to have the engines removed for safety, (mine and those around me) and just sit on the boat with lego's and lincoln logs. When the time comes that I have had enough, and God hasn't come for me, I'll just slip over the side in the night.....

Now that's what you really call a plan, LOL. We actually have a "Boat Smart Course" in FL that is offered by the state and run (in our area) by the Power Squadron (PS) that gives one a break on insurance. The PS offer all sorts of really useful courses if you have the time to take them. Once you pass the initial test the state issues you with a Boating Safety Education I.D. card which is great but I don't think it's mandatory. I personally think the test should be mandatory for all ages. I think anyone operating a PWC under the age of 16 has to take the "Boat Smart Course." When we took it years ago, the room was full of teenage boys taking it to use jet skies....and yet we still have quite a fair few accidents with them. A lot boils down to age, alcohol and being "invincible".

Oh boy here I have to disagree with you!! The last thing we need is a boaters license!! What we need is proper enforcement and patrolling of waters. If they would require a license who would be out there enforcing it??? Right.....nobody. We have tons and tons of laws on the books now with no enforcement or teeth written into the law. More often than not the government is totally inept at correcting a problem. It's all about money and bureaucracy. Passing a test, paying a fee and carrying a license will not give you good judgement or common sense. Being threatened with a stiff fine and having your craft impounded by law enforcent right on the spot will curb all the wreckless behavior we witness on the water. Anyone under 15 has no business operating a craft with the horsepower and speed now available to the public. Acting like King Kong with the throttle at max is only being stupid. This is how most people ride jet skis! I don't see how being licensed would prevent this behavior.

We had a fellow crash a jet ski in front of a power boat this week and his arm was severed by the propeller. He bled to death before they could get him to shore.

When we pick up "Sea Lice" in our wake, I usually come off plane and hope they go away. Of course, this wastes fuel, so if I can get their attention, I motion them up to the boat and (club them like a baby seal) try to explain the error of their ways. Perhaps .001 percent of the time the message sinks in, the rest of the time the message triggers a synaptic response to the middle finger on their dominant hand. Interesting science at work there....

Saving the waters, one dumbass at a time!

This last weekend we were going to anchor at a swimming point, I was idle speed, and some teens on a jet ski (that I was watching) never once looked at my boat... that they were about to cross in front of... I kept watching for them to look... but they were too focus'ed on the eye candy on another boat, until they heard me honk, which got their suprised attention, as well as their parents, who began yelling at the boys and took the jet ski from them. Parents apologised to us, and thanked me for watching, and didnt let the boys back on for the rest of the time we were there.

Finally!! It's nice to hear that I'm not the only parent that still discliplines their children. Kudos to the parents of those dingbats!!
