Lifeguard left "zone", FIRED

I support the lifeguard 100%. I think it has more to do with morals and being a simple good bystander. He has special skills at rescue and life saving procedures, the victim was within his field of vision, I feel as though he has almost a duty to assist.
I own a construction company so I get the Liability issue, I am faced with it everyday. But in this situation, it goes beyond that. Had this lifeguard stopped at the green flag and this swimmer had drowned, he would need to live with that the rest of his life, that goes far beyond a simple summer job.
The owner of the management company should make it right and be proud of his employee for doing what a lot of people don't, whats right.

That's ridiculous!!! The kid is a hero and should be treated accordingly. Maybe that management company needs to be fired! I definitely think their policies should be reviewed. Maybe have extra Life guards on duty at the posts near the end of the covered areas so that when a questionable jurisdiction comes into play, the covered area won't be vacated as the rescue is commenced. What about the swimmer that starts in a covered area but drifts out of it due to the tide pull while he's swimming? It has happened to me a few times and I have to swim back to the safe zone. I hope they rectify this as it seems real unfair to be fired for saving a life which the stated goal of your profession "Life Guard" implies as well as your skill set is in place to perform!

Not to mention that he is a nurse, and probably has taken the Hippocratic Oath that says he will hold to a number of professional ethical standards. Sitting back and watching another human being in danger and not do anything clearly falls outside of that oath and human compassion as well

Karen,

I don't think he was a nurse. The quote from the story states: "Lopez and an off-duty nurse tended to the man, a 21-year-old from Estonia, until paramedics arrived." It sounds like another by-stander helped out once the victim was out of the water.

I am frightened by the idea that people wouldn't help save a human life due to property boundaries. That is someone's family, I do understand they don't want people leaving their protected area for many reasons. But when human life is in danger. Seems like a great guy. I would do the same if I had the skills and the responsibility.

Don't quite know what it is about Florida but it just seems our state makes the news in more dumb ass ways than most the other 49 put together! How the heck can you fire a lifeguard for saving a drowning swimmer, no matter if he was just out of the lifeguards area. The management company needs firing not the lifeguard!!! Bet there's a law suit coming down the pike....and if so, hope the lifeguard wins big! So stupid it's hard to believe!

Maybe the lifeguard is better off. Could you imagine working for someone that tells you that you can’t save someone’s life if they are on the other side of the line. I can’t. It will be interesting to see the fall out from this one.

Yep just as I said, who would want to work for that company? Then again, who would want to use their service?

Sounds like this company will have a serious HR issue now that everyone is jumping ship. Don't you think someone would have used this as a great advertising story as a way to promote business instead of coming out looking like a bunch of fools?

Anyone want to start a new life guard business? Looks like there will be plenty of "dedicated to safety" personnel to choose from in that area.

Yes I know that it can be said that he left his post and what if there were trouble at his assigned area. There are many lifeguards towers in that area and they are trained to overlap in case a guard is attending a situation. It's not like he was the only lifeguard for miles around.

Taken from Broward County google search for lifeguard stations on Hallandale Beach.
( In the guarded areas of the beach, there are 20 year-round, permanently staffed lifeguard towers spaced between 200 and 400 yards apart. There are also as many as 10 temporary-auxiliary stands that are used during the peak season, special events and holidays. The lifeguard towers are staffed from 9:45 am to 5:00 pm daily.)
