Loud Cracking Noise - Near WOT

Ok went back to the service center today...

Explained symptoms... They said ignition most likely.. Cap Rotor or Leads...

Showed them the Cap and rotor condition.... They said yup they need to be replaced...

Service Manager came out... Was not happy 'This should have been checked'.. He is having words with the technician...
They are supplying new cap and rotor free of charge... due to oversight....

Hey look mistakes happen.... Like i said before... I just want to know that the boat is 100% serviceable and trust it.

Mistakes do happen but, cap & rotor are two of the most basic tune up parts out there. I'd want to know that if those weren't checked, what the hell was done for $900??
I also would be going elsewhere for service after this experience. Good luck with the repairs.

Yeah I don't know Todd...

They had certainly lubed up linkages and other bits and pieces...

I had also removed all the bulkheads from the motor for easy access... as a good gesture...
like 'here let me help you make your job easier' ... please do a good job...

This was at a large dealership ... called in to a little boat workshop on my way back... As I was there the Owner was chatting to another customer... raving about the robustness of Mercruiser engines....

He was saying the only parts that fail are starter motors... and corrosion in the Caps...

Im like....
- starter motor - Check - replaced that on Saturday
- Rotor Caps - Yup Check - replacing that as we speak

So will give him a go for the next service... might even be able to strike up a deal and get him just to check the parts I am not confident with....

One big thing that can kill outdrive bearings quick is water in the gearcase lube because of bad seals.
With the ignition service oversights I would take a quick moment just for peace of mind and check to make sure the lube is not "milky" looking.
There are two large slotted head screws, one at the top and one at the bottom of the drive.
With the drive lowered (on a trailer I'm guessing) you can pull the top one first, lube should be filled up to that point and visible.
If not you can pull the bottom and quickly put it back so it does not drain too much but you can tell the color.

Thanks for all your advice guys...

The Good News... Problem solved... Cleaned terminals in rotor and cap... waiting for replacement items to be supplied... Took it out for a run tonight... Screamed passed 4800 rpm... held at max for a couple of minutes... SWEET AS A NUT

The bad News... no video of fault.....

Thanks again for all your help guys!

Sideways, Make sure your WOT is at spec for your suggested RPM range. My WOT will take me to 5800rpm. Well over the 4800spec. I can use more prop pitch to get the RPM down but will give up low end power. Right now OldSkool will pull three skiers out of the water or a tube with a bunch of kids on it.

Yup thanks for the heads up oldskool... It ran all the way to about 5000rpm with more in the bank.... throttled back to 4800... at about 36 knots..
However... on the weekend solo it maxed out at 4800 WOT and was doing 40 knots..

The difference between the two runs.. Clean Contacts on Rotor, one extra person on the boat, cold air intake flame arrestor off and no engine cowling...

Anyway.. I will be checking tacho with digital work shop tacho... as it may have been reading high...

But it sounded sweet on song.. no miss or backfire... So I am a happy man!

I had issues with enough air intake so I opened a vent up at the bottom of the engine house. Used a register vent to make it look decent and it's near the bottom at the floor. I hate that I cut my house but if it gets more air then I'm OK with it.

When I built the house it came out a bit shorter and narrower than the original causing an airflow issue.

You can see by my profile pictures the new doghouse.

Glad you got it fixed. I didn't read all of these post but I do see you had someone do a service. Do you have a invoice that shows everything that was replaced, and if so I would check to,make sure it was

Thanks for all your help guys...

Flfrtate... Service Manager is supplying new Cap and Rotor free of charge for the oversight....
