I am hoping you all have some opinions. I have a Magma rectangle grill and it lights and stays lit, but it wont' come up to temp or cook evenly in winds above 10kts. It works amazing at the dock or at anchor, but I would like to have one that would work up to 30 knts...

Anyway, can you all tell me what you have or have had in the past and specifically if it works underway? I am thinking Dickinson but I want some opinions first.

Thanks

Josh

I don't think any are made to be used while underway. Maybe on a sailboat, but otherwise I would think it's a safety issue.

What the hell do you plan on cooking at 30kts anyways?

I have an opinion but you might not like it.....

this is not a good idea IMO.....having an active hot grill while going 30 knots in open ocean waters seems 'wrong' to me....

my concern is safety......if the water gets rough while someone is flipping a burger what is going to keep the hot burger and/or hot cooking grate from bouncing out of the grill and possibly burning or injuring the cook or maybe damaging your boat?......

or the cook cold get tossed against the hot grill in rough waters....

another concern is how would you mount the grill securely enough to insure it stays in place while traveling at 30 knots in rough seas?......

even if the grill was secured the bouncing of the grill would toss the food all around and maybe even disengage the 1 lb. propane tank from the grill....

I understand you have a large and heavy boat but I would bet it can still get tossed around some in rough water.....

if you really need to eat while underway why not grill the food ahead of time while docked or on the hook and use the microwave oven to warm it while underway?......

I thought this was a joke...nothing but bad things can happen at 30 knots

I agree. Wait till you get to your destination or eat before you pull out. A 30mph wind will rip the heat right out of any grill and it will take forever to cook anything. Plus, who is going to want to try to stand up next to a hot grill at 30mph while bouncing on waves.

Not me, no way in hell!

I agree running a gas grill while underway seem like a safety issue. Go with the George Foreman grill and cook out of the wind in the salon.

I just helped a friend move his new boat from Jacksonville, Fl to north central FL on the west coast. If it wasn't for grilling underway and running in the fog or after dark we would still be travelling.

I have to agree on this one. Some valid points have been made but I don't see that it's inherently dangerous or risky to grill while underway. These are propane tanks so you won't have hot cinders flying around. Worst case is you lose your food.

As long as the grill is secured and common sense is employed, I think it's fine.

I think the 30knot's is what has everyone off track. I agree at below plane speeds I can see where it is not a problem. To each his own, but my idea of grilling is at anchor and me and a cold one contemplating the next move on that med rare fillet.

Mmmm mmmm burgers off that grill must be tasty!

LOL, It's a very well used Magma grill. No salt spray, or fumes to speak of. He keeps it covered.

This was on a Carver 444 CPMY. The back was just make for grilling underway.

Ok just to clarify. I am thinking of having the wife grill running down the ship channel at 10knts. But the speed plus wind could create 30knt winds. Anyway I feel it's pretty safe, did it this past weekend but the only place I really have to mount a grill it the rod holders on the port aft side so there is not a wind block. With the magma one I have it would get in the yellow but not hot enough for me until I got anchored. Anyway, clearly some people are having success with this, I just wonder what type of grill you all are using.

We routinely use our Dickinson grill underway, at hull speed (6-7 knots) anything over 10 knots of wind and it is useless. Even at anchor.

My biggest concern would not be the wind drawing the heat out of the grill. It would be from the boat hitting a large wave/wake and knocking the chef off balance and up against the hot grill.

At 10kts or less that would be much less of a problem than it would be if you're running on plane. I would not let my wife cook anything on the grill above our hull speed which is about 9kts.

How about a small electric grill. She could use it in either the cockpit or the cabin. Just crank up the gennie when you want to use it and turn the gennie off when the burgers are done.
Even better: what about one of those cast iron grill skillets for under $20.00. She could use it on the stove in the cabin with the genny. It would be a cheap way to get the grill effect for the food for the few times you might get an urge for a burger when underway and it requires minimal storage.
