Meridian?

..Was an oil burner to boot.

Chevy Vegas came in diesel???

I posted this back over two years ago in a different thread.....

...... I ended up selling that car in '74 when I was going to college (remember the gas shortages back then) to buy a........'72 Chevy Vega. That Vega was "THE" worst car I have ever owned. I bought it for fuel economy. I would pull into the gas station and say " check the gas and fill the oil".... :smt013 ............

I remember Chevette diesels but not Vegas. Guess I was just a wee lad (I'd have been 6 in 1973). I do remember my mother's green Chevy Vega - I think it was a '74 and it was definitely not diesel.

Mine was an oil burner in the sense that it had a terrible aluminum engine that spewed out a quart of oil every other gasoline fill up beginning at 20,000 miles and after the warranty expired. The 4 speed manual was terribly notchie as well and it was difficult to engage the clutch without lurching away from a stop. GM was also having labor trouble (could it be??) when the Vega was introduced. One of the things the auto workers used to do on the line was place a small can of bolts inside a fender wall making a rattle that was impossible to find without removing one of the front fenders. There was an article in the Wall Street Journal describing the problems with GM and specifically Vegas back in the early 70s. Unfortunately all of this came to light after I had indured 50,000 miles of hassles. I quit buying GM products in the 80s and switched to Acura and Audi cars. I don't care how good GM is today. I will never go back having learned what really good cars are like.

As this is now a Vega thread Chevy thought they had a revoloutionarry idea by casting a siliconized aluminum block without iron sleeves for the pistons. This failed miserably. Does anyone remember Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins out of Pa. ? he put small blocks in his Pro stock Vegas and with a little help from the NHRA rule book put a hurting on the Hemi Dusters back in the 70's

What in the heck is a TT ???.

Google Audi TT and click on images. There will be hundreds, maybe thousands of pix. Basically it's a high performance sports car coupe or roadster with engines that are highly tunable to achieve very fast 0-60 times, quarter mile times and very respectable track performances. They come in front wheel drive and all wheel drive configurations. You can order one in any color you like although they have about six standard colors. We alternate between black and silver because of resale value. Unlike most sports cars, the cabin has lots of head and legroom and the ride does not beat you up. It's easy to spend 12 or 13 hours driving one on a road trip without feeling like you have been through the grinder. They also have very good heated seats and A/C making top down driving a realistic option anytime the sun is out and the temps are 25 degrees or better. We enjoy top down driving almost every month of the year.

For $1100 bucks I like used stuff with no payment. :smt038.
This is a babe getter.

To each his own I say.

I don't own a Meridian and I have two ten year old American vehicles (one Ford and one Chevy) that are in pristine condition despite the fact that one of them has well over 100K miles. Both of them look and run like they just came out of the showroom and neither one has had major problems. Just like a boat, if you take good care of them they will last for a long long time. I have always carefully considered the vehicles I buy because I know I will have them for a long long time. Same thing goes for a boat and I would pick a Sea Ray over a Meridian for all kinds of reasons.

Just the same I always find it interesting how folks define "quality" because what is important to one person is not necessarily the same for another.

Details? (me too, but all the beating I give her is done with love)

...and "For Sale"? Did I miss an announcement?

It's an '81 280zx , t-tops (non-turbo, unfortunately)... I've owned her since '86, and was a daily driver until ten years ago when I put her in the garage. Just like my boats I spent way more on her than she's worth ($4500 in mechanicals alone last 2 yrs), gotta put in a new floor pan on the passenger side and the interior needs re-doing- but I can't source any interior panels. It's just a fun driving car; used to be a lot easier getting in and out of it twenty years ago, though! They're getting harder and harder to find... Here's mine. What do you have?

As to the "For Sale", no- you didn't miss an announcement. When I bought her the family was gung-ho on doing some cruising, so the 390 fit the bill perfectly for our family of four, and I rigged the boat to fish to satisfy my main interest. The cruising enthusiasm on the part of the family has been waning steadily...so I'm ready to get back to my roots, which would be a twin-outboard CC capable of cruising at 35-40 knots to get me 75 miles offshore (and hopefully back) a lot faster than I do now.

I've completely re-done the boat, no doubt the nicest on the market by far with under 1000 hours on her. So, if you know anyone looking for a beaut...
