Friday Skipper Bud's brought a hydraulic trailer to haul my 320 from Harborside Marina in Wilmington IL to their facility at North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor IL. The distance between these two points would have been a little over 100 miles if they could have haul my boat on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) but they couldn't. Instead we had to take a 189 mile circuitous route on predominately state and county roads through places like Oswego, Naperville, Barrington, Fox Lake, Antioch to get to the Lake. The first picture is at a truck stop 12 miles from the start because the driver wanted to get some Gatorade for the 4 hour route. The second picture is the view from my truck in close pursuit protecting the rear of my boat from some moron on their cell phone or texting. I have to admit it was somewhat surreal going through downtown areas with the boat canvas barely clearing overhanging tree limbs on some of the streets. The third is the new 25,000 lb fork lift at Skipper Bud's North Point that picked my 16,000 lb boat up like it was a toy. They told me this lift can be use for up to a 340 and has a negative drop so that boats can be launch in a travel lift well using it. Lake Michigan is about 500 feet behind the lift. The fourth photo is from underneath to give an idea of how high this thing can lift a a boat and shows off my fresh bottom paint.

The fifth photo is of Prairie Harbor Yacht Club, just 1000 feet or so to the North of Skipper Bud's just across the Wisconsin State Line, which will be the final destination. The dock pictured is where my boat will be and had been moved to the East for dredging. The white tipped poles are center pilings that would normally be in the front of the slip instead of the back as shown in the picture. Lake Michigan is down a foot from last season which is hard to believe with all the snow we got. As a result, the extra dredging will delay the opening of the marina until Aprill 22 at the earliest. The drop in the Lake level has not only affected my marina but also a number of municipalities that take their water directly from there. Intake pipes in some cases froze shut over the winter due to the lower lake levels that were too shallow. Chicago by comparison has its intake cribs about 1 mile out so this is not a problem. So, I am now officially at Lake Michigan just not in it!!:smt038

Happy to see you are close to being on a big lake. Its a nerve racking feeling seeing your boat on a forklift like that!

Joe, not nearly as nerve racking as seeing my boat lifted by 20 year-old travel lift at my old marina or seeing the arch barely clear low hanging limbs in downtown Barrington!:wow:

I hear you on that. To put it this way, when we went to Alabama to survey our 268, it was the biggest boat that could fit on their forklift. Its swim platform had "battle scars" from when they put it on too close when we picked it up!

Glad your trip was uneventful - Skipper is usually very good with their transport - enjoy your new home. If you come north, give us a shout!

Ahh No sweat I' could have done that with my trailer as well, cept I wouldn't have charged you so much money... just kidding... I haul mine everywhere..

Congratulations! Glad the ride went well. She looks great. Are you planning any trip with her?

I hope to take some day trips deeper into Packer country to places like Racine and Milwaukee so our paths will likely cross!

Nice pics, thanks for sharing them. It's always a little unnerving to see your boat on a trailer or on a lift of any kind. Too many unexpected things can happen, and most of 'em ain't good things.

Just curious about something...why did you truck it all the way up there? Why not truck it to the SW Lake shore and cruise it up? I think that would have been a fun day on the water.

GFC,
Coast Guard sanitary discharge rules prevented me, with 42 degrees and white caps I would have been laying brown cable from Hammond to Winthrop Harbor! At my inland river marina they issue a tsunami warning when the waves get over a foot!!:smt043. Seriously, I thought about going up the river to the Lake and then overnight in Hammond to finish the voyage the next day. But Skipper Bud's quoted me only $600 for the haul which is less than the cost of fuel to make the 110+ mile trip by water. Also the conditions last Friday would not have made for a fun voyage and since my new marina won't be open for another 2 weeks it was better to truck it up.

Nice, Bob! Great adventure!

Mine was splashed on Friday at SB's and we went up Saturday. Went for a quick run on the Lake and then to NP for a couple of weeks. Was planning on starting to wash her up, but DNR won't turn on water until the 14th...

So went went for another couple of hours down the Lake.

Congrats on the new home!

Congrats Bob on the move.
Maybe we will see you on the lake later on in the year.

Still working on getting Dancing ready.

I see that you needed to remove your Radar and GPS and Glomax antenna. I hope the reinstall goes smooth.

Vince, Skipper Bud's removed this stuff for transport last year and the driver reinstalled it before he left and all was fine so I am not worried this time. If there's any problems they have to fix it on their nickel.

Registered,
Your signature shows Moline but your boat is at North Point Marina at Winthrop Harbor? What's the story?

Yeah. I bought her up there last October. She was actually at PHYC until the bank brokered her through SB's.

I have a couple of weeks of transient slip rental up there to make sure all the kinks are worked out, then I'm driving her to Peoria for a few weeks until the flood on the Mississippi passes, then I'll bring her the rest of the way home down the Illinois and up the Mississippi.

Kind of torn and wanting to spend some more time on the Lake, but Peoria is only half the distance drive.

Your drive to Peoria is only 20 miles or so more than mine to PHYC. Have you considered the Starved Rock pool which is about the same distance as Peoria but a straight shot on I-80 for you?

Actually, I was just looking at Springbrook in Seneca after reading an article about depth issues at Eastport with heavy siltation. 20 minutes less driving until I complete the trip vs. 4 hours closer to home. Maybe a combination of both.

As I recall, that's your neck of the woods. Any recommendations?
