On a weekend trip the Port fuel tank gauge started dropping going from 1/2 full to almost empty. I put in 30 gallons to see if it might come back up and it actually dropped further. Looks like a tank sending unit needs replaced but where or who might carry this and can it be removed with out ripping the floor boards out? Anyone have the same experience?

Geese man, There's always grimlins right? I just replaced mine a few weeks ago. But as you know my boat is different from yours. I am sure that someone here will be able to give you more information. Hope all is going well and that you and your wife are enjoying the boat. I hope you are having better weather down there as ours has gone terrible in a hurry. Havent had a good boating weekend for awhile. Have a good one buddy and I hope to talk to you soon.

You can get to it from the engine room. Starboard is easily accessible. Not sure about the port but shouldn't be too bad. Just find the tank and follow the wires - it's on the top of the tank probably right below your fridge or maybe the bottom drawer. Might need a stubby screwdriver.

As far as getting the part, it's probably something standard. I'd call marinemax.

I had one of my senders go bad and replaced it with a unit made by SSI. Check out the link. I've had no problems with it and it's more accurate too!

I can't help with getting at the senders on your boat. Mine are easily accessed through two ports on the middle of the cockpit floor.

I replaced mine with the Teleflex 90424P from boat fix. You basically need to measure the depth of your tank and then find the sender that matches. I'm not sure about removal for yours, mine slides up and in toward the center of the boat. You guys setup may be different.
I looked at the SSI ones, but the price scared me away. Looks like a top notch product though.

I've never had to mess with mine. They're not super-accurate but they work so I leave them alone. With floscans, I always know how many gallons are in the tank, +/- 5 gallons or so (b/c of genny).

Thanks to all, I am going the SSI route if I can get the old one out. I've have experience with those types of units and they work very well with no moving parts to mess up. Ron, hope I can remove the sender being under all the galley stuff. If you happen to hear screeming coming from the western direction of the country, thats me thanking the Sea Ray Engineer.

I realized after that pulling the sender OUT could be the problem b/c of the low bridge. I'd cut a hole in the cabinet and pull it out through that. OR, if you're lucky, it'll be under the fridge. Pull it out and use a hole saw to create an access panel.

Ron, Just returned from a visit to see what the tank looks like. Yes the sending unit sits on the outboard edge under the fridge with only 8" clearence. Is the OEM unit the lenght of the depth of the tank? If so then I do have an issue. Pulling out the fridge....cann't be that hard after all the many "other" adventures I've partaken in. Wonder how hard it would be just to bend it up to remove it since its junk any way. I'm using a sensor that Jimmy Bouy has, SSI, so going back in should be OK. Its the getting out thats of concern.

Fridge out is real simple. TONS of space behind there. I hung out in there when I replace the crappy SR galley faucet with a Delta. If you have to cut a hole out of the floorboard, it'll be easy. No idea how long the sender will be. JimmyBuoy should be able to tell you.

Thanks for that input on the hanging out:grin: I forgot that I still have a access panel I picked up several years ago so if I do cut a hole I have something to put back over it.

A great aspect of the SSI is that it's like a hockey puck with wires - nothing has to be slid down into the tank so installation in a cramped area is easier. As far as the original unit, it is easily bent by hand as you pull it out which makes removal easier. One thing that caused me to take an unexpected trip to the hardware store was that the old screws for the stock units were not long enough to be used with the SSI unit due to the thickness of the plastic housing. The SSI didn't come with new screws, but the screw holes lined up perfectly with the tank.

I also had to be patient with them since my size was not in stock and it took about a month to get it delivered. I'm thinking about ordering another one for the port tank since it is so much more accurate and doesn't cause the gauge to bounce around when less than 1/2 full like the stock sender. Solid product.

Thanks Jimmy Bouy for the information. What was the thread, 10-24 ( 32) or 1/4-20 ( 28) and how long were the screws needed? All I remember they were SS allens bolts.

It was over a year ago, man I can't even remember what I had for lunch yesterday!:smt101 You might want to take one bolt out before getting into the job, take it to the store and determine the size by testing various nuts on the bolt. Then just get the next longest bolt, and yes, they were SS allen bolts. In my case, I didn't realize this until AFTER removing the old sender and open gasoline makes me nervous - so it would have been nice not to have to leave it exposed (I just left the SSI unit sitting in position) and hope not to hear a big BANG while getting the longer bolts!
