The drive alignment is wrong. This is a very finicky adjustment that you must make. The adjustment is performed by turning the adjusters on the engine mounts. You also need an alignment tool, which takes the place of the drive shaft and slides into place in the engine coupler. You should have a drive service manual to do this the first time.

You can either buy or make an alignment tool.

Take this to a machine shop if you have access to one.

That is an old pre-alpha drive, and it has been a very long time since I pulled one, but isn't there some shift linkage that must be turned in just the right orientation of the drive won't seat all the way?

But, Frank s right in that the alignment must be right.....not just close....of things won't fit right.

Same as the Alpha. The shifter and linkage must be in forward.

Trolling for points, Mr. Webster?

I had the bellows replaced late last fall. Upon starting and launching the boat earlier this year, I had a choice of Reverse, Reverse, Reverse and neutral once. My 6 yo son was with me and said, "Dad you need to take the boat back and tell them to get a new fixer. When they fix it, they need to take the boat back here (marina) and make sure it's fixed right." I told him I couldn't have said it any better. Supposedly the shifter flip flopped during reassembly. The problem was taken care of immediately.

you guys are awesome, anybody know where i can get a manual i need to replace the water pump and, i was wondering about prop pitch anybody have any close ideas for this boat? maximum speed ? thanks guys

Actually, surprisingly, you can get the manual from Mercury. Even order it from their web site.

Best regards,
Frank C
