Be nice Gary:smt009, He just joined and needs some help.

gr8tmined - Welcome aboard. You might want to add your boating info to your signature section. Gary just has to give a hard time to all the new member. The more info you can give about your problem the better people can help you. When you say "host of problems" what other problems are you having?

welcome to the board!

you will find most are willing to try to help around here, ......and some just have a different sense of humor...

can't say I remember anyone having had this problem but you might try a search. I'm sure you will get a few positive replys with some ideas to help out.

On outdrives that have shift dogs (you don't say which drive you have, but I'm pretty sure your have dogs) you need to shift gears, both into and out of, forward and reverse "smartly". Don't abuse the shifter, but use some force and shift quickly so that the shift dogs seat fully and thoroughly. If you don't, the dog only seats part way and yout drive will pop out of gear. If it jumps put of gear enough times, you will need to have the shift dog replaced.

You could also have a misadjusted shift cable not allowing the outdrive to fully shift into gear.

Adjust your shift cable first and then take it for a spin.

I would say that before you go touching and adjusting cables and such, the you should find a manual for you engine/drive combo. I imagine you have an Alpha drive??? There are some links to manuals in PDF format here on the site. Find them and look through them
As others have sugested it probably has something to do with your shift cable.

It depends entirely if the boat has an Alpha or a Bravo. Alphas absolutely, positively do not pop out of gear once fully engaged because of the design of the dogs. Therefore if an Alpha does pop out of gear, the lower unit needs a rebuild to replace the dog clutches.

If a Bravo pops out of gear, if could be an adjustment, cable wear, or clutch wear. Without knowing what drive the boat has, Gary gave the best answer.

Best regards,
Frank

I respectfully disagree.

If an Alpha absolutely never pop out of gear, then why would the lower unit need a rebuild in the first place?

The clutch dogs get worn from sloppy shifts and/or from misadjusted shift cables.

I'm currently experiencing what sounds like a similar issue, I have a 98 190 with alpha drive. It only happens when I first get out. I don't think it is actually popping out of gear, but over revving due to cavitation. I pull back on the throttle and it is still in gear. I usually at this point throw it in reverse and back into drive and it is fine the rest of the day. Where I put in is full of weeds so I had just attributed it to that. It doesn't always do this maybe 50 percent of the time.
