New gps

Anyone know if there is a gps unit that is a direct fit for the old northstar explorer 550 on a 2008 270slx?

Seems like a very tall order and rather unlikely. Unless it's a standard sized gauge (like a 2" gauge), it's virtually impossible to find a drop-in replacement for any electronics. You always need to do some modification or adjustment to the opening, either by making it bigger or getting a cover / new panel.

That unit had quite an odd shape by today's GPS standards. And even the standards of then, too. It has a pretty high aspect ratio where it's taller than wide.

Probably not... but you could replace the entire panel and put a new Touchscreen MFD in its place. To accommodate this you could get a Smartcraft gateway (like the vesselview connect) and digitally display all the data from the gauges on an overlay or dedicated page thus allowing for the removal of the two gauges. A new panel can be cut and manufactured to match the factory (or any other pattern) finish. Not sure of the dimensions of the current panel but you might be able to get a 9" MFD in there.
