Hello all,

Just got my first boat today. 1995 240 OV which hasn't run in a year and change. Bought from a broker and previous owner took decent care of it. It had $8,000 worth of work done last year ( new starter, steering components, trim tabs etc..) and during inspection I had noticed the boat was equipped with many items I had intended to keep on board (extra oil, drive lube, belts, distributor cap, plugs etc..) which tells me the previous guy didn't skimp on maintenance.

Took it out for a sea test today and things went well for the most part. No engine smoke as most of the fogging oil was blown out when broker started it up a few days ago, and she ran smooth at both midrange and wide open range. Started on the first try this morning ( when I had gotten to the dock I noticed the engine was already warm) and when I checked temp after shut down it felt warm to touch...not hot.

The only things I could notice were the outdrive wouldn't go up using the switch on the throttle at first. There was another switch beneath the throttle for raising the drive when hauling that did raise it. The switch on the thottle did work after that. I suspect the solenoids were stuck or something. The speedometer was inoperable also.

What are some thing to keep an eye out for in the coming weeks / months that I might need to know about. The boat has sat a bit and the broker suggested twice and emphasised that I need to get a dose of new fresh gas and some stabilizer into her as soon as I can to keep it from becoming sluggish. He said the first few fuel refuels will be important to wash out all of the old gas. He did say that they did use stabilizer when they winterized it over a year ago and it looks like they did a good job.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Jughead,

I have the same boat. But a 96. Feel free to contact me with questions if u need help, awesome boat man! Get some pics up

Do you know the last time the impeller was changed for the sea water pump? If it was recently then it is probably OK. But if you don't know when that was done, my recommendation would be to get that changed now. If the impeller fails your engine could overheat plus you may get stranded on the water. I would also inspect the bellows on the outdrive carefully for any signs of cracking or tears. If they are original to the boat, you ought to consider getting them replaced as well. Also check your bilge pump to be sure it is operating properly. And after burning thru a few tanks of fuel you may want to change the fuel filter since you have old gas in the boat right now. Other than that, enjoy the boat.

Thanks for the advise Dave.

I'll be in receipt of the invoices for maintenance records for the past few years when the boat arrives. I'll keep an eye out for those items you mentioned. I know the bilge pump was working and the water pump seemed to be working .....the engine wasn't running hot at all. The bellows is something I'll have an opportunity to inspect when the boat arrives before it goes in the water.

Should I add stabilizer to the gas when I put new gas in?

If you are going to burn thru the fuel quickly, then stabilizer is not necessary. If you think it may be in the tank for a couple of minths, then I would add some.

Hi, I too have a 1995 Sea Ray 240 OV. I purchased mine about 7 years ago. My boat currently has 316 hrs on it.

I put the new Sta-Bil for marine use in my tank after each fill up. I also use a fuel treatment at the beginning and end of each season to keep a clean system.

To improve performance I installed a hydrofoil on my drive, as well as a stainless-steel skeg guard on the drive. The foil has allowed me to get the boat on plane much faster and provides better positive control of the trim.

Regarding your question about the trim switch. The trim switch on the throttle is what is used to raise/lower the drive. I have no other switch for this sytem other than the "trailer" switch to raise the drive to the trailering position.

Regarding the Speedometer, you should check the pneumatic line that presses into the front/forward portion of the drive. If you look in that area you might find this line disconnected. This line is often disconnected for winter storage. Many times checking this you can solve your problem. Particuarily if your boat was professionally winterized.

I have spoken to other Sea Ray owners of this boat and everyone is very happy/pleased with the craft. We really enjoy ours. My sons would not want to trade this boat for anything!

All the Best,
Robert Melchionda
