I’m desperate for a little help, I have a 2006 40DA dancer with Cummins diesels. I purchased the garmin 8616 and the multi engine Mercury gateway NMEA 2000. The led flashes on the gate and it’s shows it connected on the garmin under networks but I can’t get the icon to show for the engine information on the Garmin. Mercury told Mei needed a diesel patch lead so I bought & fitted one but still nothing. The vessel/diesel view still works fine, I believe it doesn’t matter which port I use in the J block as I have engine sync. I’m at a complete loss and would welcome any suggestions.
Thank you

Can you see the device in the instance/device list on the Garmin?

Was the "diesel Patch Lead" a wiring connector between the two J-boxes under the helm?
You can route the J1939 engine data data buss directly to the 8616.
Pins G and H on the Smartcraft connectors and J-boxes are J1939.

At the OneHelm level, is there a "A/V, Gauges" selection? If so, then select Menu...Installation...Num Engines. There, either the number of engines can be set manually or AutoConfigure can be selected. If this works you should start to see some gauges with data.

Alnav May have the solution. I installed one of the 7608 displays just for engine data display. I had to physically configure the engines in the display set up, how many, which was port, etc. Something else to consider is did you have to create a nmea2000 network? If you did, the physical architecture not functioning would give the same results.

Thanks for the responses, the patch lead was a recommendation from Mercury they said it was required for diesel engine boats for smart view although its not smart-view i'm trying to connect, but they are the "experts"
I was also told that as the boat has engine sync you can connect in any available port as the are already connected. I have created the nmea 2000 network and its actually showing on the garmin as a network, according to Garmin an instrument icon will appear when its working correctly. Thanks for all the suggestions I'll go and try them with the tech and see if any suggestions help. I also read a post today from the Seaboard marine forum that 18/19 Mercury gateways have a firmware issues and may require re flashing, you would think that Mercury might mention this issue when you ring support?

The C-Cruise features are connected to your starboard engine Smartcraft J-Box under the helm. Usually, you will see some green tape on the starboard engine cabling. Starboard engine is the "master" and port is the "slave". Here is a couple of drawings that may help you on that wiring.

I had the issue where I saw the network on my Garmin, but it wouldn't read any gauges. Turns out I needed a terminator resistor cable between the engine and gateway.

Not sure if that's what you need, but that's my $.02

Update: I purchased a further gateway that had apparently been “flashed” with suitable firmware, unfortunately it’s exactly the same, we rang Mercury support and they now say that we require an older version of the software as the new version won’t work with Cummins, Mercury promised a call back & email but did neither. Very frustrating,

Many thanks for the suggestion, I’ve forwarded it to the tech,

Final update, after calling Mercury back we spoke to someone who recognised our problems and asked us to return the gateway for software update, they returned it within 4 days, we plugged it in and it worked perfectly first time. All the engine data came through immediately. There is clearly an issue with the current software version of the gateway and older sea ray Cummings powered boats. Thank you to everyone that contributed, I’m very grateful.

Where did you connect into the J1939 , specifically? I have the 8612XSV and would love to have the ability to display engine parameters on the device via NMEA2000. I see, what appears to be, the J1939 box under the dash near the amp. Thoughts?

Nevermind. I bought the gateway, connected it to the blank port and presto, now I can see engine data (boost, coolant, rpms , etc) on my the 8612. Yay!

I’m waiting on 2 4312’s for my 390 and hope that it’s an easy setup as I’d like to get all the engine data that’s on the Merc Smartcraft screen to show on on one of the two Garmen screens that I’ll have. I don’t like the Stamart craft, feels too clunky and difficult to navigate, IMO.

By no means have I got all this figured out. There's a ton of configuration aspects on my Garmin. However, I plan to take the boat out tomorrow so I will see how it all works out and try a few things and let you know how it goes.

Hopefully it will be a nice ride and the setting up will go smoothly. Please do share anything you can.

turns out today is a no-go…. Weather is super yucky. Wifey wants to go out on Mother’s Day… so that’s what we will do.
