Not the second happiest day.....

Having contemplated this over the last year or so as well I would suggest you add Offshore, Outer Reef and Grand Banks Aleutian to your list depending on your desired budget.

I would agree with Outer Reef but it may be out of of our budget. Where got the chance to take a look at one at FLIBS and we really liked it.

Do tell us more... Haven't heard a lot of bad things.

Based on our budget we will be in the used market.

As your in the used market I would not worry. Not the full story but you can read about this in various internet searches and court documents. Marlow (and Nordhavn and likely many others) have had some build quality issues that they have hid behind because the US sales office sub contracts to a factory and they sometimes point the finger at each other.

As your looking used (as are we) those issues will have been well sorted and known. As always a good survey is key.

As I am sure your considering you have to decide on what speed you want. At this point we "need" to be able to run at a minimum cruise speed of 14kts, preferably 18+ without burning 100 gallons per hour. There are not a lot of "fast" trawlers. The ones I am aware of are Outer Reef (depending on engine package), Marlow, Grand Banks Aleutian, Offshore.

Of those only the Marlow and Offshore dip below 1.1 million, with the Offshore well below that.

If slow all the time is okay you have LOTS of choices in both trawlers and downeast styles.

The downeast styles don't work for us, we "need" three good cabins, and other there are very few options like that in downeast.

Thanks for the clarification. We have gone back and forth no what speed we need to run. While I certainly admit I would like the option to run 16-18 knots I don't know it if that desire is greater than ours to make a life style change. Going slower for a few years in a 43/47 Nordhavn. All options are on the table and we still have to sell out current boat to make the next move. Looking at making the next move in the upcoming 12 months.

We have heard from all manufactures that have a boat in this range that can do 16-18 knots about the ability to out run a storm. How often is that a need?

Just something I am curious about

I'll add to the list here. There are a few 20-25 year old Fleming 55s on the market right now that can make the 16kt speed in a pinch, but still settle into a comfy 7kt cruise with a 2500nm range.

Still thinking the Nordhavn 47 is going to be the eventual liveaboard boat for us.

I can relate to the feeling. We've had our fair share of boats but when we sold the last one we were really sad. Kind of shocked, like what did we just do? We loved that 340 and really planned on exiting from boating for several years due to other priorities and kids education. Well, here we are two months after selling the boat and my wife more than me wants another boat badly. Cant't deny how how fun boating is and the memories created with family and friends are priceless.
