Official 1998 Sea Ray Sundancer 290 Thread

Thanks Ducky, yes water is staying is staying in the bowl when it cycles, I’ve watched the YouTubes on that. See if I can get my broken butt down in there.
So told a lie, left the system on for a straight two days and the bowl was empty, going to get the parts to rebuild the commode, doesn’t look too tough. AFTER I fix a leaky water heater hoes tomorrow, It’s always something, and yes Jeff and Ducky and Mitch. I will buy EXTRA fittings and a bit of pipe for next time. Get off my neck.

I Love My Boat.

Hey Crew, Mechanic came yesterday and replaced the GenSet coupler, old one was in about 4 pieces, new impeller, (I told him to since I had it), new choke assembly and found a loose connection on the port drive relay ( the new one just replaced!) drive is back working. So absolute no start on the GenSet no click no anything from the switch on the generator and in the cabin. Here’s the sequence of events:

1. Started he GenSet and no raw water

2.Took the boat to the marina repair people to service the GenSet and drive relays. (Read my other post about all that drama) did not try to start the GenSet due to the coupler not being repaired.

3. Had Super Electrician install the new battery charger. Everything looks great.

4. Called the new mechanic to repair the coupler, he and his brother do a good bit of work at my marina. He fixed it as described above. Tried to start the GenSet and nothing. To mechanics credit he admitted he’s not up on electrics that aren’t working.

5. Texted Super Electrician, he said to look for a breaker on the GenSet. He’s on a deep sea fishing trip coming back on the 5th. The obvious A/C breaker and fuses are good on the remote panel.

Am I missing something not so obvious or is there a hidden handshake somewhere on the Genset?

I Love My Boat.

Hey Crew, figured I would post an update. Mechanic that installed the coupler, new impeller and choke assembly wired the choke backwards and it popped the fuse on the control panel at the GenSet. All fixed, generator runs great, carry’s the load and lots of raw water coming out. Good win!

Once you get this boat sorted you won't know what to do with your free time. :)

Going to take twin 2B and BF out tomorrow, supposed to be a beauty day, super electrician is making new dash panels out of Navy (of course) Blue acrylic for me. I’ve started ordering new switches from “Rocker Switch Pros” they are pricy but look fantastic. You can laser engrave anything on the switch you want. I’ll post a picture of the Starboard start switch. It was failing and looks great now.

So boat won’t get hauled out for winter time, super electrician recommends the “Extreme” 500 watt engine room heater to keep everything good. Thoughts from my NC/SC crew mates? That thing is pricey, I’m only 10 minutes from the boat if the power goes out BTW.

I built a new dash and replaced all my switches and push to reset breakers. It's amazing what a refresh on the helm area will do for an older boat.

Sounds good. I winterize the fresh water system and heat the rest. Bilge and cabin

Will any space heater work or does it have to be something like the "XTreme heater" that GirlyGirl posted?

I was thinking of getting a wifi controlled plug and space heater so that I can turn it on when not around dock. (Dock has wifi year round)

Hey guys- I am downsizing from my SR 380AC. I am looking at a 1999 290 that has been repowered with 4.5L Mercs (250 HP versions). Boat looks to be in great shape (haven't seen in person yet). Anything special to look at with one of these boats? I have been a boat owner for a long time so I know the basics to look for.

Transom assembly. Fresh or salt water boat?

The Xstream heater is ignition protected; that explains most of the high price. Given how many fuel containing devices and hoses exist in the engine room of our 'not exactly brand-new' boats, this gives peace of mind.
I use a normal west marine heater for the cabin, but would not use the same heater for the bilge.

If you are going to heat your bilge I'd buy the proper heater that is rated to be used in that environment just incase there's a build of of fumes it won't blow up. Consider the cost to be an investment.

There's one mounted in my bilge from the previous owner hard wired to the same circuit as the electric cook top and I monitor the temperatures in my bilge, helm and the cabin by wifi weather sensors.

I use one of these heaters in the cabin set to the lowest setting.

Thanks guys. This wouldn't be a permanent install. Just something to hang/place in the engine room to keep it warm over winter then remove in spring. Still think it needs all the fancy bells and whistles?

They're talking about gas fumes so yes. What you're describing is what a lot of guys do. You still have potential for leaking gas etc. I'm not one of the safety patrol types, but with a heater in a bilge you need to take some precautions. I'd reason to bet a lot of storage building fires happen from non ignition protected equipment.

So I walked my dock(s) last weekend and it’s about 50/50 folks using inexpensive infrared heaters or the certified ones, I’m going with an extreme to be safe just going to ask super electrician if a 350 watt will be sufficient, they are about $150 less.
