Official 400EC thread

So engine work is almost done (these are from a couple of weeks ago, which is the last time I was able to get up to the boat). Going again Saturday for a couple of days to work on the engine room.

(gotta start taking the pictures in landscape :))

BTW the extra blue hose is for the oil change pump I am adding while I am doing this.

I also had to reposition the oil cooler as the molded hoses are no longer available and the bend radius was too tight to get the hoses in place.

Has anyone ever raised or purchased a taller platform for their 400? The step from our dock is so low it makes it difficult. Would like it to be at least as high as the middle step? I’ve thought about having someone make some fiberglass filler pieces to connect to the Lowe part to make flush with the middle step. Any thoughts?

The low platform is nice for “coving out”. I’ve seen other boats in the marina that keep a small portable platform at the dock for use while in the slip.

Yeah I know it’s nice for that. It’s just that all the places we go for dinner and whatever have tall docks like mine. Some of my passengers aren’t as young as they would like to be.

Looking good! See if you can set the genny up for the oil change pump too while you have the motors out.
I’ve got both motors and genny connected to the reverso and it makes oil changes a breeze.
Would be really nice if you can do the same for the transmissions. Wish I had that,

I have a three valve oil change pump, so I do plan to add the generator to it, but I will do that when I get the boat home.

I see your using the front mount raw water pumps.
Was that present before or is this an upgrade?

It is an upgrade. I wanted to be able to access the pumps and impellers easier, so I decided to use the crank driven pump. I also added an electric fuel pump as well and relocated the fuel filter as well.

Here is the mount I created for the fuel pump and filter:

I also moved the blower motors to make room for the fuel filter/pump mount and ensure I had room to access the new crank driven pump. It is not in this picture but I ended up putting the port side blower behind the battery charger. It was the only place I could find that had room to mount it.

By the way, i have not gotten around to posting it but I have two of the sea water pumps, with the fuel pumps attached, that I would be willing to sell. Anyone interested?

Started cleaning the engine room while I have the open access of no engines in the way.

I have changed the sanitation hoses as well, but did not take a picture yet.

Hopefully on the next trip up to the boat, the engines will be going in!

Harold nice to see your boat coming along.
I’ve always thought I’d like those pumps but never got to it.
The OEM design is a PITA to deal with. I’ve done it enough to be able to deal with but, no fun!
One other easy now but damn near impossible after engines are back in....change the water heater..if you haven’t already.

That was my thought too Mark about the pump. I did not want to have to deal with the starboard engine’s water pump again! :)

The water heater was already replaced a season or two ago. They managed to get it in without removing anything from the motor. Don’t know how, but they did!

The other thing that is really tough is the bilge blower hoses. It seems to me that they were installed in the boat BEFORE the hull and deck were joined! Not only are they run through an opening which is barely the size of each hose, they extend about a foot into the radar arch. There was no way I found to reach them from in the engine room or from the outside. Even if the side panel is removed while the helm seat is out of the way, the hoses are run inside of a sealed panel. I have no idea how to get to it! I had to just force a long section of the new hose into the old hose to “splice” them together.

It maybe hard to see, but I took this picture pointing up into the old blower hose. You can kind of see that the hose extends up about a foot into the base of the radar arch.

Since the blowers don’t really build up pressure the old and new hose should not separate. (I hope!)

I was also going to ask about those blowers..
Mine are original and work well but, are louder than the engines at idle!

I replaced the original in-line blowers with Jabsco Ventillation Blower Flexmount Model JAB35440-0000 (4" hose, 12volt). They are SOOOO much quieter!! Best money I had spent (at the time :)). It made a world of difference.

Here's a picture of my latest modification. Installed a flat screen in the mid cabin. Hid the antenna in the cabinet, along with a nintendo video game console for my son.

Nice, but where is the cabin door?
I like the idea, but my son uses the lower bunk, so I would need to mount one lower on the wall for him. :)

Cabin Doors were removed by the previous owner. We were considering reinstalling but decided not to. We have a curtain we can use if needed.

One other question - getting ready to install more lighting in the galley. For those of you who have already done this, any tips on removing the upper trim pieces to hide the wiring?

I removed the valence on the starboard side (above the salon sofa). I believe I posted pictures of it somewhere in this thread. I would have to presume the process would be about the same to remove the panels above the galley side.

Look at Post #520 in this thread (about page 26).
