Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

Bahahah, I just looked at replacement heat exchanger and aftercoolers, just to see. Yea, puckering still. I sort of planned for 10k in random things that needed attention immediately. Luckily it's my off season for business so I should be able to spend the next two months tinkering and making things better.

Another major item to ask about is the overhead and injector sync service. It’s scheduled at 250 and 2000 hours but if not done at 250 you should get a quote and ask for that in your negotiation. It’s not cheap and needs to be done with specialized tools by someone who knows what they’re doing

These guys didn't own it at 250, and I don't think they were as focused on the details as I've been. We sent an updated price based on these items, and hope they'll go ahead and accept the reduced price. I'm of the school, id rather take a credit and figure out the repairs myself. Controllable that way.

absolutely, I’d take the same approach (and did with ours)

Have you any ideas on a Caterpillar diesel class option? I searched the forum and only one thread came up from 2018 but the class was through a new York company, not Florida. I'm sure the 3126 wouldn't be a relevant engine for them to teach, but figure it would be better than a yanmar class.

Caterpillar produced an excellent video tape covering bsic maintenance procedures a while ago. It is long out of production not, but a CSR member copied it to DVD and sold a few copied here for the cost of production and mailing. He is in the process of moving from NYC to Utah so I am sure he isn't in a position to reproduce the DVD now.

You can try Ebay for the Cat videotape and perhaps someone has one of the DVD's here that he no longer needs. The Cat Video is extremely well and professionally done and is worth owning if you are just getting into Caterpillar 3100 series maintenance.

Thanks! This is our first diesel, period. So I have a lot of learning to do and hoping to get some of that under my belt before we really do much. BTW, I have gone through and read a lot of the advice you have given over the last 15+ years on this site and definitely have learned ALOT from that. Thank you! We feel a lot more confident in our boat, the engines, and the future after reading through it.

I’d love to get my hands on that video too, let me know if you have any luck tracking it down.

you’ll love these engines. We’ve burned 800 gallons this year since April (a lot for us Great Lakes boaters) and every time I run the boat it’s a pleasure. Just today we took advantage of a mild afternoon and just ran around for a few hours at 2150 rpm, took a quick swim, and came back to the dock. You’ll be looking for any excuse to untie the boat and go out

Does anyone know if the fuel solenoid on the 3116 is controlled by a relay? and if so, what part # that relay is???

On my 1998 3116 there is a relay in the electric box (not sure what else to call it) I just replaced it after port motor wouldn’t start. BWD brand part R3112 is what I replaced it with. I’m not a mechanic but pretty sure that relay controls the fuel solenoid.

I found a weekend class in Annapolis that I was considering. It isn't specific to Cats but they had a progression of classes that you could take. Annapolis School of Seamanship if I recall.

Yes I saw that one too. Maybe worth taking the trip, but at the point I could take a certified diesel mechanic class at a local tech school and break even on the price.

Actually, you will find that the 3100 series Caterpillars are very easy to learn and to master typical owners maintenance chores. One important thing and a decent reason to view the video is learn when the job you are doing is too far beyond the average owners ability and whenyou should get a Cat technician involved.

For 3126's

I have been using CAT 1R0751 Advanced Efficiency Fuel Filters. However, looks like there is a 1R-0750 Advanced Efficiency Fuel Filter as well, specs are the same - 2 micron. I can get them off Amazon in a 2 pack same day for about the same price as the CAT dealer. the 1R-0751's are about $10-$12 cheaper from the CAT store vs Amazon, but take several days to get here.

Question - Are these interchangable? It would be nice to have the Amazon option.

In the mean time I ordered 2 more sets of 1R0751's from CAT

Won't work…….The threaded fitting in the top of the 1-R-750 filter has 1"-14 threads. The 1-R-751 filter has 7/8"-14 threads.

We have a similar issue in Panama City…….except, the Cat store cost was $36.68 for the 1-R-750. We are in Nashville TN frequently and Thompson Cat is right off I-24. I stop by there and buy all my filters, belts, hoses, etc. The 1-R-750 filters are $14.86. The Panama City store does a lot of marina business; the Nashville store is a large construction equipment store…….I never realized that wearing jeans/work shoes instead of shorts/boat shoes made such a difference in pricing!

Thank you Frank!! The 1R-0751 are $20 from Yancey here in GA, but unfortunately, I couldn't get an online order to go through today....grrrr

if you guys are interested in the self exploding marine version 441-4342 they're only $22 from CAT ;)

Given my experience, this description humors me

Attributes:
• Unique filter media provides unsurpassed protection.
• Acrylic beads prevent bunching
• Spiral roving provides greater pleat stability and maximum dirt holding capability
• Nylon center tube prevents metal contamination
Molded end caps prevent leaks

I need to adjust the throttle linkages, as when I push the throttles all the way to the stops at the helm, the governor linkage on the engine is about 3/8" short of the stops on both sides. thinking I'm missing about 50-100 RPM because of it.

Do I tighten the throttle linkages at the engine, or attempt to allow more travel at the throttle quadrants at the helm?

If I tighten at the engine, will I also not increase idle speed?

ive not actually disconnected the throttles so take this for what it is (maybe worthless..)

my ball joint ends where they connect to the governor appear to be threaded and adjustable. Are yours the same? Might be easiest to just back it off a little and tighten the jamb nut to get the extra travel needed.

I’d also disconnect the cable at the governor and make sure you can easily push it to the stop by hand to be sure there’s no binding or corrosion
