Does anyone have any input,...experience with either pan heaters or block heaters on marine diesel motors? I am thinking about placing Wolverine oil pan heaters on the Cummins 6CTAs. The purpose would be to decrease white smoke in cold weather initial starting (which really isn't a problem except in the spring), but more so to get sufficient lubrication to the upper engine & valve train upon start up.

I contacted Wolverine today and they suggested that I also place insulation between the heater and the bilge to prevent heat related damage.

I am wondering whether they are worth it. Should I look at block heaters? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks,

James

Thanks Gary,

Excellent information in your post from last year, I should have done a search. Based on that I will probably get the #16 models as suggested by Wolverine.

My boat has block heaters ...should i use them all the time or just in the spring and fall when temps are colder?

I only use them when its cold out ( spring / fall ). Buddy who did his same time as Myself always leaves his on.
