I have had trouble with my battery charging throughout the spring and summer. I replaced my batteries in Dec and again in July. It appears I'm doing a lot of things wrong some my fault and some just the situation I'm in - storing the boat in dry lot, temperature >100F, letting the boat sit unattended for months.

This past week the symtoms are back on 4 week old batteries - voltage spike to 17v while under way. Low voltage alarm after charging for 12hrs. I think this article explains some of the issues -

For those who are curiose - the batteries are interstate wet cell lead/acid batteries. So far interstate has replaced them no charge under there 1 yr warranty. As you can see from the article this is not the batteries fault.

If you are spiking to 17V while underway, I would be suspicious of a faulty alternator/charging system. That's the only way I know of to get 17V out of a 12V (14V max) system.

Also a good way to kill batteries.

Proper charge rate is 14.5 to 14.7 VDC.

Verify voltage at battery with a known, good voltmeter. Before you start throwing parts at it.

Will killing the batteries completely for a day due to leaving the wrong switch on kill brand new batteries also? Dad did this on accident and made me sick. Brand new Deka 31 Wet Cells this year...

They should charge right back up if charged immediately.
