Post Your Classic's Top Speed

'81 SR245, 16x16 prop - about 33 give or take, with 2 people, a full tank of gas and water tank, along with 3,000 metric tons of provisions that the admiral thinks we "need" on the boat. I know it'd do better, but if I off-load her stuff, there'd definitely be a problem! Just once I'd like to try her out empty. Never gonna happen though.

1989 390 express cruiser t-454 (340hp), 29.6mph gps, 3/4 fuel, full water. This is a two way average (upstream and downstream). It's not worth the fuel to see what it will do. Previous boat was an '89 Formula f-292 sr1 with t-454 mags. 74.1 gps, and it would do that in any conditions.

From what we spoke about with similar engines and boats it is amazing still to me that the 390's and the above 340 DB run the same with the same engines and in a drag race similar to a geriatric wheel chair race I would still pull ahead with all that superstructure and weight.

I had family friend a long time ago who had a 390 EC with 454 Crusaders in it and after some different prop work and tab reconfiguring he was able to cruise 25 mph and top out around 34/35 mph. I have asked him exactly what he did but he says it was so long ago he cant remember.

What's the dry weight of your Carver?

41mph 4600rpms on gps full of gas, 19pitch mirage props. I can't say it will do that anyday of the week. Probably more like 39 to 40 with a heavy load. It would do 38 with stock al 21 pitch props tops and 4500-4600rpms. The props were not that good of condition. I would like to try some 21 pitch stainless quicksliver stock diameter props to see what that does.

I've said it before. Carver got the propulsion squared away, and Sea Ray didn't. The prop pockets are a huge, huge performance loss.

Last fall I pulled one right after the other with my parents' 38 aft. They weighed 28,500 in the slings and I was about 19,000, and neither of us could pull ahead of the other on the way there!

From what I remember on the 38's they ran very similar to the 390 Express. The 38 is just slightly larger and heavier than my 370. I'm not even convinced its the weight that slows the 38 down a little bit, I think its the slightly larger surface area in beam and length along with the small keel and semi rounded entry.

Our classics WOT is typically just south of 36...turning 2320 rpms, sipping about 58 gph, swinging 28x33 wheels and weighing in at a svelt 50,000 lbs or so wet & loaded. I like to let her rock 'n roll atleast once a weekend to make sure everything is within spec. When I ran the slug last April right after I put on the new clean & balanced props, new paint, no pwc and the weather was cool and water pure glass, the GPS showed 36.1. Might have had some wind at my back but who's counting. The jet ski seems to take about 1 mph off cruise and top end. It does a solid 65 and the rib about 48 for what its worth...

Those are both good speeds for that size a boat! Wow!

Nik

all 3 engines are in good shape and low hours. also good clean bottoms. at that time the 310 was on a lift and the 230 trailered. they have safety gear, mooring gear, and full fuel but not a lot of junk. two adults and 2 50# dogs.

props on 310 are 25 pitch cupped and tuned. as stated will try a pair of 24's on the 230 this spring. right now the 230 gets 39 mph with the B III leg and 22's.
don't have weight of boats. boats and trailer are 7500# for 230 and the 310 was 18000# and change

I would also consider width and deadrise. Both count for max speed.

Lift strakes play a big part also with reducing drag. The 22 Pachanga for example has them very wide which actually lifts the boat enough to have the entire chine considerably out of the water at higher speeds.

2150 rpm's at WOT equates to 30.1kts or about 35mph with the big Cats purring right along. Not too bad for about 30 tons of boat.

Getaway - Got your PM, but I can't reply because your inbox is full.

My single 350 pushes my barge to about 30 mph on gps with me only down wind with no water and 1/4 tank.
