Someone asked me to post pictures about the tool I bought to pull out the cutless without pulling the shaft. It took about 45 miutes to press out the old cutless using the StrutPro. It took only about 15 minutes to push the new one in.

Lesson learned: After you take out the setscrews, shoot some penetrating oil into the screw holes. I had tried to just push the old one out first. It was tough, so I squirted some oil and let it sit for a while. The bearing pushed out much easier. Pushing the newone in went quick. Replace the set screws with new ones when you do this. Hex head set screws can brek and for the 30 cents, it does not make sense.

First picture is after I tool the tool off ans sprayed oil into the set screw holes and at the end of the shaft.

Second picture is the tool back on and pushing the new cutless in.

Third picture is the tool .

Where do you get your strut tool and what did it cost you?
Looks like it is a must for a job like this.

StrutPro.com I did not get the full yard kit which covers all cutless from 3/4 shafts to 2 inch. My cutless was 1 1/4 x 1 1/2 x 5 and the kit cost me 400 with shipping. I figured if I do this only once, the cost was a waste, but if I do it twice I am well ahead of the game. The best price I got around here to do the cutless was 450. Now I can do it for only 70 a pop, the price of the cutless.

Thanks for posting, I suppose sometime I may need to do that, this is my first inboard boat, I will save this thread. I assume there are peices of split "tubing" that goes around the shaft to push the bearing out?

We get regular questions on cutlass bearing replacement by do-it-yourselfers. If I were you, I'd come up with a rental rate and a plan and rent it to other CSR members to help defer the cost.

My marina already approached me to rent out the tool. Yes there are split bushings that go around the shaft that the tool push the cutless out. In the second picture you can see the steel bushing just past the collar - towards the upper end on the right. I am just impressed on how easy this tool was to do the job. I had spent a lot of time reading the entire process and said here goes more than a weekend, but this tool was just a little over an hour.

Check this out. This association purchased a StrutPro tool from one of its members and loans it out to their members. This could be a perk for CSR members who sponsor this site??

How do u know when its time to replace it, is there play in the shaft or it is something that should be done every few years?

Great Thread.
Anyone know where to get the part number of the Bearing?
My manual (2004 39 DA with 1.75 shaft) has the strut part number (1617992) but not the bearing number (or OD).
