Last summer my son bought his first boat, a 1986 Boston Whaler 11 Super Sport. It has a 1985 20hp Evinrude outboard with power tilt and tele-flex steering.

Our winter project, is a father / son project, to restore this classic. Spring will come soon, we have our work cut out for us. I will chronical our project here for those interested. Plus I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions to boot.

So here is the boat, before we started.

Enjoying it on the water....

Brought inside to begin work. Engine, steering and electrical are all removed.

Rails and woodwoork are removed.

The woodwork will need a lot of work... a few pieces will have to be replaced. We'll see how the others clean up for refinishing. Worst case I have source online for a an entire new set of wood all cut, finished and ready to install. But don't want to cut corners and dump money at it. Rather do it the old fashion way, sweat equity.

We'll start on the bottom side....

There's evidence of prior damage and repair. We'll inspect this....

It cleaned up well with an acetone rub down. All stickers removed. We already have new OEM rub rails, new OEM Boston Whaler decals, and new registration numbers on hand. We'll be ordering up the gel-coat, resins and other materials.

Let the sanding and refinishing begin!!! :smt038:smt038:smt038:smt089:smt089:smt089

Really cool, I am planning on doing this one day as well. Are you going to keep the boat the original color or change the hull color?

I recently saw one that was painted a light grey color on the hull and it looked really nice, I plan on doing that.

We will be keeping it all original.

I am actually heading out to look at a 1979 15' Whaler tomorrow, might be joining the restoration process sooner than later!

So we have all the rough sanding to the bottom done. We've got the painted area sanded off exposing the area that had been patched by previous owner. This area was not gelcoated, it had some paint on it. All the paint has been sanded off. Now we are on to dealing with the smaller nicks and chips in the gelcoat to prep them and get ready for filling them before applying a new coating of gelcoat over all of it.

One question I have, for those in the know, is any ideas what patch compound might have been used in this attached photo? While it is sound structurally I'm concerned about bonding new gelcoat over it. If it is Marine Tex, they warn about gelcoat not bonding well. Should I use a bonding agent anyway? Which one?

Any update on progress?

I am looking at a 13 footer Boston Whaler with 40 pony outboard as project.................

I just purchased an 84 whaler 11 sport How do I subscribe to your post

We owned an '86 Boston Whaler Super Sport. The dealer suggested we order it without the rails because they get in the way when getting on and off the boat. Great advice. There was a small stainless hand rail on both sides of the helm seat that was an option. We did that. Getting rid of the bow rails can save you from falling into the drink or into the boat. The rail is a tripping hazard IMHO.

I looked at the 13 foot Boston Whaler last night and I passed - transom and other parts of boat were delaminated/"rotten" and moter was junk - a 40HP pull start...........

A great price at $1,500.00 but just more project than I was willing to take on.

Will keep looking for smaller project boat or may just build own..............
