What is the law/courtesy required when 2 semi-challenged individuals are fishing in an 8' inflatable in the middle of the downbound channel of the Detroit river, and I am bearing down on them at 20 kts?

Keep in mind the channel at this point is VERY narrow and water levels are about a foot below chart datum.

Not so much as a nod or a wave as I went by, after slowing to near idle so as not to bury them with my wake...

I so regretted not adding the hailer to my system at that point!

:smt101

Some are just dense,
And don't got no smarts;
So the sociable Captain,
Would engage in a quick game of darts.

There are 2 unfortunate results here:

1. Terminal stupidity is not a chargeable offense,
2. You are still responsible for any damage your wake causes.

This reminds me of the time when a small boater kept jumping my wake.
I kept waving him off me. But nooo that little bast*rd wouldn't listen to me. :smt021
I got so pi$$ed off at him !!. I brought the boat up to about 40mph.
Then I went after him he tried to get away from me but couldn't.
I was throwing a big wave at him every time I went around him.
After about 10mins of this he raised his tee shirt .:smt043
I went over to his boat and asked what the h*ll were you thinking.
He said he was just out having fun.
I said you were so close to me jumping my wake I could see the color of your eyes.
We talked for about a 1/2hr he said I thought you went nuts.

Dave is now a very good friend .So you can stop STUPID.

Here in N.J you are required to take a boating safety course and we didn't learn any of those skills. I want my money back!

Have been up and down that channel many times as i kept at wyandotte marina for years. The fishermen do seem in the way some times.usually anchored off or electric trolling motors .My 40 silverton threw a peretty good wake at 17knt. and the jet skiers would follow me all the way .As for depth ,its 36 ft just stay in the middle of it .Those guys stay when tankers come through so your little wave isnt gonna bother them much.and its not far from shore either.Just watch for the idiots that cut across around middle channel to get to amhurstburg, now thats scarry.I know capt. of tug that does dredging ops at mouth on south end he can tell stories pretty good of idiots in that channel.Something like his tug takes 1/4 mile to stop in full reverse etc...

Well I have to say, Keeping in mind that yes you are responsible for your wake and all the other no no's but, STUPID SHOULD HURT

Maybe.... but I just checked my "Boating Safely" book from the USCG Aux and no where in that book does it say to chase down a smaller boat that pisses you off and try to sink it until he waves a flag (or T-shirt) and say's "Uncle" There's alot of real stupid people out there on the water. My 2 cent's... try not to be more "stupider" than them ;)

+1 Bridog

My pet peeve is the bass boat guys that insist on fishing in channels. Guess the chop on the lake is a little too much for boats with a twelve inch freeboard. Which is all the time in Lake Erie on weekends. Perhaps these geniuses should fish an inland lake or get a boat more suitable for a Great Lake.

and try to sink it
Now tell me where did I say that ???.
Maybe I should of just shot Dave with my 45 for NOT getting away from me when....
I signaled to him to do so .:smt001

You really don't get my point?
I get your point :smt001 . I was NOT putting him in NO harms way.
I just chased him like he was chasing me. No harm No foul.
We're friends now and he'll never do that stunt again. :smt038
I'm sure you (wayne) feel the same way.
Yes I was only joking about shooting him. :smt001

Maybe this part...

HMMMM.... After realizing that he made a mistake and "tried to get away" maybe you should have used your superior boating knowledge to explain to him what he did that was wrong rather than going after him "throwing a big wave at him" every chance you got. Sometimes when a larger boat "throws" a big wave at a smaller boat it could sink it.....Sometimes.

And to WPT07.....Yes it's very frustrating to deal with people who really know nothing about boating or safety. Unfortunately you will come across this almost every time you head out. You handled it correctly. Be aware, react accordingly, and move on.

I guess if you say I was wrong I guess I am.
At 53yrs old I'm a very safe boater. :smt001
Please don't lose any sleep over my one mistake with my angry. :smt001

Ok, I think we learned something here,
#1 Don't Jump Wayne's wake unless you are larger than a 30 footer.
#2 Don't piss off Scott because he may not just be throwing a wake at you
I'm not sure what a dire circumstance would look like when your in a 34' with twin 8.1's but I feel safer knowing there are NRA members in Michigan City.

Grilled please...

Dire circumstances are a moving target dependant on the situation at hand. For instance I had to really restrain myself the other day when two ducks decided to use my swim platform for a toilet........Anyone care for duck pate'?

C'mon Scott is MC really that bad? At least you don't have the bangers from the eastside cruisin' your dock on jet ski's looking for easy pickings (Thanks to Cal Harbor USCG for getting those creatins off the water). Couple of years ago two go-fasts pulled out of the harbor side-by-side out to the Calumet breakwall, two jet-skiers were jumping their wakes and one go-fast pulled past the other and one jet-skier face planted into the side of the second boat - fx neck - DRT! Sometimes they learn the hard way!

Understand the need and the right. When you travel to Illinois do you keep it in the boat or do you aviod Chicago? I have a friend who is a retired FA and he "enjoys" Chicago but does not travel there much for that reason. Too much of a hassel even if you have the right.

Since this thread seems to vaguely resembles a disussion about boating courtesy and safety, I had a minor incident this past Saturday morning on the Des Plaines River that puzzled me. I was cruising on plane about 20 Knots going past a fairly large Barge Tow boat nessled next to several barges tied to the sea wall. I was in the middle of the River between the channel markers at least 200 feet from it. There were no "No Wake Zone" signs and Tow was dead still in the water. As I went past the Tow Boat the Captain waved his hand signaling me to slow down which I did immediately. My question is was I in the wrong in this situation or did the Captain just need another cup of coffee?
