Hello. I was wondering if anyone has moved the Smartcraft display to a different location on their helm. Mine is dead center in front of the steering wheel and I would like to move it to the electronics panel under the chart plotter. It’s a pretty good distance to move so I would be surprised if the wires had enough slack. Has anyone tried this?

I would suggest taking the dash panel off and getting a look at the wires. They are likely zip tied all over the place but you aren't going to be able to base your decision on anybody else's boat or experience moving it as all of these installs will be different. And as @b_arrington said, you could probably buy a new cable if need be.

Thanks I’ll be digging into it soon. I guess I was hoping someone would say they use the same cable for a 500 Sundancer as the do on the 380 and I should have an extra 10 feet. Wishful thinking

Cables are likely all the same length, but how they were run and how much loose cable you have to work with is going to be all over the map.

Here is a 20 foot data cable - 84-879982T20 - https://www.amazon.com/Quicksilver-HARNESS-ASSY/dp/B004QJOMJQ/

They also make a junction box - 878492K14 - https://www.amazon.com/Mercury-Smartcraft-878492K14-Gauge-Junction/dp/B006M2R0GC

You can likely get both those parts cheaper on ebay or a marine shop. You should be able to put the junction box behind your SC1000 and run a second cable to the new location.

You should check to see if you already have a junction box somewhere although I'm not clear on how the data flows on the Smartcraft side of the network. Not clear you can just add a cable and get your data like you can on the NMEA/ST side. That's my "not an expert" caveat.

Wow! I didn’t expect you to do my legwork for me but I appreciate it. I’ll take the dash apart and have a look this weekend. I’ll post what I find. Thanks again

Ha. That's what this site is for. Anyway, I've been living behind the dash of my 38DA for the last few weeks, so most of these are tabs already opened on my browser. :D

First of all. Merry Christmas Everyone
I took the dash apart and found that the wiring harness form the back of the gauges to the smart craft display are too short to reach my side panel.
New plan. I have a systems monitor which is taking up valuable real estate on the dash. I can put the smart craft in its spot.
My question is. Do I need the systems monitor? I never use it. I guess all systems are good.
If it is important I can relocate it.

If it works yes....keep it as it is important. If not...well the cost to replace is big and the work & cost to swap to Maretron is also, but in my mind well worth it.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know what the purpose of the coax cable that screws into the back is.

that communicates to the main brain in the engine room.

Same to you and good luck on your move. I just updated my Smart Crap to VV703 and it was a DIY project. Keep in mind you can upgrade if you want and any panel you need made call Sam at Technographics he can match your finish perfectly.

Good move. Im doing the same thing. Moving smart craft to make room for another chart plotter. Unfortunately my smart craft wires were too short to move it to my side panel so I moved the systems monitor to the side and put the smart craft where the monitor was.

Anyone know where to get the metal tape that holds the light strip on for lighting up the dashboard

Looks good... Just get foil HVAC tape from Home Depot and cut it to size, should work fine.
