I have a Kohler 5KW generator on my 340. I only use it at cruise because it is so loud at rest.

Has anyone added a soundshield to their generator? Can it be installed without removing the genny?

Also, any idea of cost to do this?

Thanks,

Jeff

Maybe something is wrong w/ your gen or gen exhaust. Mine's very quiet and no shield required.

Could be because you have 4 more ft between the Gennerator and your cabin on you 38 too.

The sound shield has a base pan that is placed beneath the generator. The electric, fuel, water, and exhaust line pass though cut-outs in the base plate. The rest of the sound shield then clips to the base plate. Therefore the genset must be removed and all of the connections rerouted.

Removing the genset is not that bad of a job. You might want to remove the exhaust manifold from the adjacent engine to gain some working room. Then you can easily disconnect everything and unbolt the generator. Two guys can lift the generator just enough to slip the base under the unit. Then you reconnect all. If you can talk your marina into lifting your genset with their forklift while you put the pan in place, it'll make the job easier and do-able for one guy. Should take about a day for a reasonably handy person.

Best regards,
Frank

i had the 03 340 w/ sound shield. Great boat. Yes the genset is loud. The sound shield does help... But it will still be heard. It does not limit service access and covers come off easily ... I dont know about the installation process but looks like FRANK covered it very well .

I added a kohler soundshield to my 2004 340 with 8.1 engines. It was very easy and no, nothing had to be removed from the boat to install the shield. I paid $650 for the shield from my local kohler dealer. I would say it took me about 4 to 5 hours to complete the install. It should knock out about 30% of the sound when you compare it to before the install. Overall it was worth it.

Hope this helps

I agree, our Kohler 5E is still a bit loud even with the sound shield. It seems like some of the noise is due to vibration being passed through to the boat. Anyone had any luck using more cushioned mounts for their Kohler?
