Sound Shield

Do they make them for the Westerbeke gensets?

for what it is worth we have basically the same boat and my Wes. genny is very quiet......we can carry on a normal conversation while sitting in the cockpit when it is running.....maybe something is wrong with yours?.....is the soundproofing insulation still attached under your engine room hatch?.....

I don't think our generator is really very noisy either, but apparently opinions vary... I think everything is in good shape, but of course the admiral would like complete silence :) So I just was wondering.
Thanks!

This is what I have done to mine to quiet it down. New anti vibration mounts and a two stage muffler. Have yet to fire it up but I should know how it works next week.

For Westerbeke's here's what I have:

[h=2]410DA Westerbeke Generator Sound Guard[/h]
Mr. Chapman, thank you for your inquiry. Engines1 received your request for a sound guard (P/N 49484), we do have that in stock and your cost is $1873.00 plus approximately $175.00 freight. If you would like to place the order, we do accept most major credit cards, so please call us 800-548-6252.

I have no experience with a sound shield for a genny, but I have often wondered if the shield would keep the heat generated by the genny inside of the shield and cause the running temp of the genny to increase.....if so is this higher running temp of the genny detrimental?......

I tried the two stage muffler last season and though I think its a bit quieter, in a quiet anchorage it sounds as if im the only one running my genny. It is pretty quiet where as the admiral and I can watch a movie in the cockpit and not be bothered by it. I was wondering the same thing about the heat behind a heat shield. I've only been aboard 1 boat that had the genny running and you had no idea it was on and that's because it was a Westerbeke.

The Kohler on my 280DA was very quiet without a sound shield or dual stage muffler. I think the was due to extremely cramped engine room acting as a baffle plus I have been told by the Kohler tech that older units were quieter then the newer ones.

On my 330DA with the stern drives there is enough space in my engine room for 4 people to stand. The noise from the Kohler was unacceptable I think in large part because there is so much space in the ER the noise was reverberating off of the bilge floor and walls. I installed a Kohler OEM sound shield and a dual stage Centek muffler. Made a huge difference in the noise level. Not cheap but we run the genny continuously when away from the dock so it was worth the expense.

The sound shield is insulated obviously but no issues with heat. I assume that Kohler engineered this genny to run at correct operating temperature with the sound shield.

Jim,

how do you fit four people in your engine room? I've got the exact same boat and motors and don't think I could fit more than two adults. Hell, it's barely comfortable with one person in there

You may want to visit this thread for additional ideas to quiet a generator down. Seems to me that exhaust noise from single stage mufflers and vibration are also big factors in generator annoyance. This was my journey to improve my situation.

That is what I did several years ago as described in the linked thread.

Have you thought about making a sound shield? My generator is to old and I can not find a used sound shield anywhere. I have been looking for the last year. This season I was planning on making a sound shield. I am going to make it out of Aluminum or wood covered with fiberglass. The interior will be lined with insulated heat shield. I will add a vent on each side of the box.
