Stupid is as stupid does

These threads make us Twin Engine newbies feel sooo much better! I dont let anyone talk while I am docking cause I am still too scared of hitting anything. Last weekend we came back in just as about 3 380's where also coming in to our dock, I don think they even slowed down!

My daughter turns to me and says "I bet their kids get to talk!"

I just cant win..............

Haha ... that is just funny. Only because I am only docking a 25' boat and ask that EVERYONE sit and stay quiet while I pull her in as I am still getting used to the windy conditions that vary on our lake. My daughters hate that they have to sit still and be quiet!

Instead of hearing them whine, I gave them jobs. They are now the "Official Lookout Princesses" (they are 5 and 7 this week). They lookout for other boats coming and going and anything floating in the water.

They have a blast being the "Lookouts"!

It's also pretty interesting when you don't have neutral start protection and fire up a
355 hp diesel when it's in gear and aren't expecting it...

. . . or shifting without realizing the engines were NOT at idle speed.

My motto on docking is "Never move fast than you are willing to crash into the dock". That way. . when everything goes really squirrly, you don't do as much damage.

Admirals often do very unpredicatable things near docks. I remember the time when she and the crew basically untied both for and aft before I had the engines started. That was an anxious moment. Fortunately, the engines fired up immediately. We had a long chat about that one.

That conversation was punctuated the following weekend when. . .wait for it. . . I attempted to start the engines not quite in neutral. Only took a minute or two to figure out the problem. Fortunately. . .they didn't untie me while I was figuring it out.

pumping out the rod holder......now that's friggen funny!

Yes....I too have experienced the "not quite in nuetral" scenario.

Not related directly, but after reading the title of this thread I thought it would fit right in. Oh, and this was while trying to bring the boat into it's slip.:smt021

Last August, I did the very same thing first time out with my 225 Weekender that I had just bought a few days before. I trailer it and had put in and went and parked the rig. Came back, hopped aboard, went through the engine compartment venting, then the moment ....turned the key and nothing happened. Aw, man...what did I buy here??? The dock hand comes up and asks what seems to be the problem? I dunno, just got her. He climbs aboard, tries the key, thinks for a second, grabs the shifter/throttle and gives me the hey, it wasn't in neutral, now try. Fired right up. Did I ever feel stupid!

I think a worse thing is forgetting to put the plug in before backing the trailer into the water. Fortunately, I haven't done that with this boat. Only with my 12' Alumacraft. And even then you can practically just pull that one ashore.

That picture really bothers me.

Did you talk to them?

I’m not sure what is upsetting me more, the kids not wearing PFD’d or having them on the bow as they make way.

Man, that photo is bothering me.

Doug, it bothered me too. All singing and dancing while Dad was pulling the boat into the slip. Good thing N.J has mandatory boating safety certifications.:smt021

Really? Kids horsing around while underway and no pdf's? It's mandatory for kids under 12 to wear a pdf at all times on the moving boat, at least in California. I think he may want to rethink not taking a boater's safety course!

Here's me and my sis back in 1975...

All this while we noshed on paint chips.

Anyone pull away from the dock without unplugging the shorepower? No, not me but a good friend!

Oh yeah, and since we were such safety nuts, we had to wait 1/2 hour after eating to swim.

We also dangled our legs over the bow while underway ALL the time and begged Dad to hit some waves so we'd get our feet wet. For safety we had to have the stanchion btwn our legs. All this while waving to the NYPD boats and the Coasties. Who knew???

You got that pic out of the Searay Living mag didn't you? You don't suppose they been drinking too, do you?

Holy... that's an incredible picture :smt101
I love my kid... and my friends kids! I can't even imagine being in gear with one of them... or anyone on the bow!

I'm not perfect but really...

I've done the old "not in neutral" trick too... had to stand up and think about it before I checked! I've also had a deadman switch come partially off... that one took longer to figure out 'cuz it looked like it was still on... oh well :)
