Winter project; The mount in the floor that holds the vertical pipe for the table is cracked. The table wobles and needs fixin. I have looked at archives and not found a solution. anybody have a easy fix?? This is the table in the cabin across from the galley. Thanks.....:smt100 88 sundancer....

This is from an older thread I made in spring '08
Some positive projects started

It's the aft settee table mount base on the engine hatch. The original screws were stripped out and it didn't seem to be straight forward to repair.

My friend is a machinist and I asked him to make me an aluminum ring that I will drill and tap for some 10-24 stainless screws and sandwich the engine hatch with the ring.

Here's the Ring under the hatch.

It worked exactly how and wanted.

Here's the topside.

I looked at that post, I am not able to get to the bottom or underneath . There is an issue of carpet also. I expect to have to cut the carpet in 3-4 places and peal it back in order to start. I just would rather not start with out knowing what I am getting in to. couple of hours, couple of days, special stuff to finish etc.??

Do you have a hole under the base? If so can you make a ring like I did, then cut it in half to start it in the hole to allow the ring to be sandwiched?

I don't think so. If there is any access it will involve taking up a lot of carpet. We are dealing with original carpet and once that starts, no telling where it ends. Trying to not tear up anything more than necessary.

I'm not positive, but the base might be screwed in, not through bolted. See what happens if you try to back a screw out. (could be captured nuts, too)

That would be good if true. The mount itself is broken (split along the vertical),it is not loose in the floor.

If it turns out not to be, drill the heads of the bolts off so you can remove the base. Grind the remaining bolt "stumps" down if they don't fall out on their own (or if you can't reach them through the table leg hole). Put a new base in (rotate it it so the new holes go in between the old ones) and screw it in.

It would make sense that it would be screwed in... to you and me. But then, we weren't the ones who designed it! :smt001

I am thinking that the base is bolted in with some sort of nut capture or plate not unlike the fix pictured in previous posts. To split the metal base before coming lose from the floor is a strong indicator. A plan is germinating in my formally military mind as how to proceed... Time to put down the banjo, get out of the rocker and do something.

I will try to document this with photos. Should be an easy fix. Where would be the best place to find another base mount?

There's a good chance are it was made by Garelick. Check any marine store - regardless of brand, make sure you look for the correct diameter and a base that fits a tapered pole.

An old trick I've seen with screws stripped from door jambs is to wood glue some golf tees tapped into the holes, cut them flush, then you have new wood to screw into without having to get larger screws (since you will be limited by the base). This assumes your floor is solid of course.
Oviously this isn't as strong as a thru bolt with a back plate on the other side, but if you can't get access...

Well you never know what you have till you get into it. I have some pictures to post if Olive Oil can figure out how to do it. The base was plastic. The floor was solid and tight. I removed the base and found a large crack..Since I want to use the boat this weekend-I put a two inch water hose clamp on it-fit perfect. and reinstalled. Good as new. Just lack gluing the carpet down...Going to wait a while see how it holds up. Might be a permanent fix....Whole job took less than 2 hrs. Now for some spinach.....

These should be the pictures-?need mor work on picture posting

Trying again with the pictures. OK-First picture is fixed with clamp, next pole back in base, base out and upside down, far right shows crack about 5 o'clock last picture is starting point.
