That's why the Coast Guard trains their best Coxswain's at the Columbia Bar!!:smt101

Could easily have gone bad, quickly! Like the article said, folks lost their lives doing something similar at the same place in 2000.

I didnt see any life vests on the crew. Idiots.

That is crazy...I'd be looking for a new job.

The Grey River on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand is famous for it's notorious bar and the city of Greymouth at its entrance. The fisherman who eke a living in this part of the country have a real respect for the hazards presented in crossing this bar particularly in marginal conditions. The link is to a video which while not having spectacular footage of bad days on the bar, does have interesting commentary about real life experiences of men and woman who cross the bar every day for a living. (including a suggestion that life vests should be worn!). It's part 10 of a series and some of the video's in the series show some real marginal crossings. It's educational for us recreational fishers who sometimes need a kick up the stern from by angry bar before we realise how unpredictable and knife edge catastrophic these events can be.

The Greymouth and nearby Westport bars have claimed 23 lives since 1985. They will claim more.

God Bless them, to do that on a daily basis! One time would be enough but to know every time you go out you might have a crossing like that is unbelievable! :smt101

All I can say is that is crasy. I did something as stupid back in 1995 coming back from Block Island to Point Judith. !3 miles in 20 foot seas, three 19 foot boats, but we all wore life jackets, and kissed the ground when we pulled into the ramp. Then pulled out the coolers and had our first beers at 9 am. I will never do that again!
