That sounds about right. Cash for clunkers and stimulus jobs exaggerated

Because... If you make more than $250K/year you are an evil person that has been taking advantage of people. People that make more than $250K/year need to be punished!

"You cannot lift the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer" - William John Henry Boetcker (1873-1962)

"It's not that I want to punish your success, I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they've got a chance for success, too . . When you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody." Barack Obama to Joe the Plumber

BTW - I downsized from my Carver because I am conscious about leaving a smaller carbon footprint. You need to downsize too.

Why are people so concerned with carbon? Don't they know that all life on Earth is based on water and carbon? When we release carbon into the air, it doesn't just float in the air forever. Gravity works on molecules, too you know. It will settle to the ground, mix with the soil, and become a plant, which will get eaten by an animal, which will eventually get eaten by a person, who will burn more fuel, spread more carbon, and make more life...

You gotta be a real lemming to think of carbon and CO2 as "pollutants". What's next, a ban on steam?

I sure if you want to help those behind you could just give the IRS more money as a tip for doing such a good job.

Man, I sure am glad we have gravity to keep the carbon cycle cycling.:smt043

They feel responsible for the crack heads and people on welfare so to relive their guilt they electing Obama.
And now that Al Gore has traced the most co2 coming from cow farts they are going to put a tax on each one.
Hmmm if that is true then they are going to tax all the politicians in Washington because nothing but BS comes out of their mouths! :smt115

This is a real question for you, and I am genuinely interested in the answer. Do you believe that success is a zero sum game? ...that there are only so many "succeeders" and by limiting excessive success it will, by the natural order of things, redistribute success more equitably? If you do, is there any fundamental support for that premise?

Also, about the carbon footprint thing...the best solution for those who believe in reducing theirs is to simply stop breathing.

Ford reports surprise $1 billion profit

Automaker now expects to be ‘solidly profitable’ in 2011

And you said cash for clunkers wouldn't work. The gov't needs to do more of this to entice the consumer into making big ticket purchases. If you give the money directly to the tax-payer/consumer, he will only pay down debt and that will do nothing to get us out of this recession. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33583171

I completely disagree with your rationale. The government needs to stay out of the economy. They can regulate it, and I think that is appropriate, but to become a key leader in the economy is very dangerous. So now, these people have cars in their driveways that they cannot afford. They got a good deal on them, but who makes the payments? Who affords the repairs?

This is exactly what got us where we are. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were given governmental direction to get people into houses they couldn't afford. They couldn't keep up with the payments. Look what happened. Ludicrous.

That is great of course you know Ford didn't get any Obama money they did it on thier own because they didn't want the Government telling them what to do. So how is Government Motors and Chrysler doing with the Government control? Not as good I would bet people are shying away from thing the government controls. Gee look at thoes stock prices yep Obama really did them good.

Simple Analogy

An economics professor at a local college made the statement that he had never failed a single student before but had once failed an entire class.

That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism. All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A.

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.

The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

It could not be any simpler than that.

What a profound shortlittle paragraph that says it all

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

If you believe that this is representative of "cause and effect", then there is really no point in trying to engage a rational discussion about politics or economics. I am not trying to be difficult, but imagine how ridiculous it would sound if someone read the same headline and then concluded "How awful the clunkers program must have been...Ford should have made $3b in that length of time. What a colossal waste of effort." That would be an equally absurd conclusion from a disconnected premise.

A car engine without a throttle plate in the carburator will run at maximum RPM all the time.

The government is like a throttle plate on the economy. Maximum economic prosperity comes when there is NO government regulation or involvement. Whenever the government regulates anything in the economy, is like closing the throttle a little - all it can do is slow things down.

Giving money to poor people to help the economy is like giving wine to a drunk to stop alcoholism. They simply do not have the financial knowledge to help anybody out. They will spend whatever you give them, and end up poor anyway. Usually, with nothing at all remaining to show for it.

Do you have some info to support your statement or is it an assumption? I have been wondering who used this program but haven’t seen a breakdown of users by income or any thing like that. While the gov was dishing out incentives, they weren’t financing the purchase. Banks have been scrutinizing loan applications and the applicants credit worthiness closer than in many years. Witness to this are several CSR members who even with sterling credit ratings, etc(they say) have had regular consumer and business loan applications rejected. I know a few people that used the clunkers program. None of them fit the loser profile you draw. They traded the kids beater or the yard truck, that kind of thing but were able to purchase the vehicles they were looking at without the clunkers program. Those I know of were going to make a purchase anyway and when the clunkers program went into effect they made sure to take advantage of it.
