The big old 80's 340 owners thread

Lawdog
you will love everything about the old 340s except the visit to the fuel dock..bit all they are makes that more tolerable we went from a 240 to the 340 and never look back.
incredible boats when maintained well.

Congrats on your purchase! Best of luck to you.
I'll offer what you probably already know. Engines! Don't turn the key until you pull the plugs and see they will spin with a wrench. That would be my main concern. Same with the genset. If the motors spin freely, that would be a very good start!

So, I finally got the chance to get down to the boat. Long story short, after checking things out, the engines fired right off. While changing my batteries out I broke the wire terminals off of the neutral safety switch on the port engine. I made a little wire bypass so I could get the engine started. I took the boat out for an hour and water temp and engine oil pressure was all in good ranges.

i didn't touch the generator yet and I need to replace a water strainer that feeds the air conditioner condenser unit. Oh yea, I need to replace that safety switch too. I'm also going to upgrade the electronics.

Greetings All,

Does any body have any in-depth knowledge or information on the Professional Mariner Newpro 20/35 chargers that
came in our boats?

The charger bank for the house side (dual 12) appears to have given up the ghost.

Thanks,

-Mike

Sorry - I thought I had posted an update to this issue.

Just for some background, many things were starting to shut off or reset when I turned over the starboard engine then finally the engine could not be started without the emergency switch being utilized.

After some screwing around, load testing batteries and eliminating the battery switches and isolator it started looking a lot like the charger had bought it but the load test on the batteries was ok!? And then I made the voltage measurement from the battery negative to the starboard engine block - 0.8 volts.

Not a lot, but considering that there should be absolutely nothing there..........

Bad negative battery cable.

Does anyone have any sage advice for pulling a radar cable from the center of the radar arch to the electrical panel at the starboard helm?
getting the old cable out was a pain.

Thanks,

-Mike

I've heard you can attach the new cable to the old and use the old to pull the new one in. Too late for that. Start looking for removable panels along the way.

The old cable had jamed. I actually had to cut it.

Bummer.

I have a friend who has re-wired two boats for all new electronics. The latest being a bridge boat. He uses an electrician's snake and removes everything that might get in his way, often including cabin headliners and helm panels. I have no experience with stuff that complex unfortunately.

Buff and wax is finally done
Boy oh boy is she shiny

and got the hailing port on the transom...naming ceremony this weekend !!

and got tired of the cord on the dock

Lookin good! Must be nice to have a covered slip.

Yet another of life's tradeoffs.

Looks great, oh how I'd love a covered slip

hello, looking any ideas or advice on problem.
i have an 87 340 sda, last yr, boat would run fine for 20mins, then stbf engine would die out, like no gas. engine would idle fine, but could get pass 2,000 rpms. took to marnia, they said it was the fuel collaping down by fuel pump, ass there is a 90 deg bend to pump. so i replaced fuel line , seemed like problem was solved. this was done early aug, boat ran fine rest of yr.
now this yr, just got boat in mid june, i am seeing same problem, exactly at 20 min, stbd motor dies out, i switched tank from stbd to stbd tank, to stbd to port tank. still same issue( elimates a tank issue), rebuilt carb last summer,,all filters been replaced. only thing not replacedd is fuel pump. maybe that is where i should of started. boat will idle and run by to 1500 or so. guy at work said maybe the coil?? help!!! boat is also for sale.

How do you get to the water tank. My level indicator is not working so I wanted to check it at the tank but I do not know how to get to it

Mine is under he shelf at the end of the mid berth...4 screws hold it down

7 hours again and no joy! A couple weeks ago after a hard run to burn off old fuel, the port engine shut down after coming off plane and wouldn't restart. Figured I'd run the tank dry, so switched to other tank with no luck, changed filters...nothing. Plenty of fuel, but spark seemed week (all new ignition parts) so finally swapped ignition systems and she fired right up, but no water from exhaust so knew impeller let go. Went today to clean all grounds and check suspect thunderbolt module on starboard engine before condemning it, which starts and runs fine now, but the port engine is back to how it was before swapping modules...makes no darn sense! Frustrated and tired figured I'd go ahead and change the impeller on the dead port engine...what a total PITA is that!! No slot in the bracket to slip off the captive bolt, hoses permanently rusted on the cast tubes, and can only find about two fins worth of rubber from the completely shredded impeller.

So...any ideas on the non-running engine appreciated, and the name/address of the idiot that designed the raw water pump so I can go beat him to a pulp also welcomed!
